"Check out one of the goals that went in on (Freddie) Andersen," Hrudey said. "This one went five-hole and although his stick is raised, that's clearly because of the pants. And that's what some of the goalies have told me around the league -- what they’re noticing in practice is that they’re getting scored on a lot five-hole. And instead of before, because the thigh pad was flatter, the puck would hit and just stop there, now they’re noticing that it spins off."

All told, in 44 games on the week, there were 248 goals scored for an average of 5.64 per game. On its own, if that average were to be sustained for a full season, it would be the highest average goals per game since 2008-09, when there was a 5.82 average.

NHL goals per game averages by season
2016-17: 5.56
2015-16: 5.42
2014-15: 5.46
2013-14: 5.48
2012-13: 5.44
2011-12: 5.46
2010-11: 5.58
2009-10: 5.68
2008-09: 5.82

So far in 2016-17, there has been an average of 5.56 goals per game overall, which is still higher than any of the past five seasons so the league was already trending up.

Can't remember if I read it here or on another forum, but didn't Lehner start with the equipment adjustment at the beginning of the year already ?

And that the other goalies league wide are just now catching up.

So the thread title mentions goalie pads but the only thing I've heard being reduced is the size of goalie PANTS...

The 16-17 data falls just outside two standard deviations of the data since 11-12, so there's about a 95+% chance that something changed this season.  That said, there's only about a 2% increase in scoring this year compared to the past five years.

The form fitting pants were mandated Feb 4th. Some guys were using them prior, but most were not.

I think we're going to have to give this a little more time before we assess it. We know how goalies are. They'll adjust.

Maxi-pads are like goalie pads, for women.

I try not to be pedantic. But when it comes to distinguishing between rappers from the 80s and 90s, I can't help myself.

I could care less about 80s and 90s rappers, but even *I* knew that one.

some of the pants stikl look too big to me.

Next item to shrink is the chest protector, cutting off the wings that reach up to the ears, and the wings on the arms which don't provide any protection.

IMO, this will make an even bigger difference than the pants.

Fun fact: both of tone loc's hits were written by Young MC.

He wrote twice as many hits for tone loc as he did for himself...

Don't have all that extra material acting like a net.

I hope shoulder pads/sweaters are next. Just a little change. Just like the pants.
