Far too often some random topic comes to mind that I want to talk about, but it really doesn't fit in any thread.  I think we need a thread that can act as a dumping ground for that kind of stuff.  It could be a nice little place for people to vent out all their crazy off topic stuff that winds up hijacking threads too.  Random conversations, talk of dinosaur deities, it's all stuff we need to get out sometimes.  If nothing else, it could serve as a "get to know you" type of place, to see what makes certain people click.

Anyway, my random question of the day that didn't deserve it's own thread: why do radio stations east of the Mississippi start with a W and those to the west start with a K?  I'm sure it's some archaic system, but radio call letters seem so pointless now.

It actually changed over time

http://earlyradiohis...us/kwtrivia.htm

The United States federal government began licencing radio stations in late 1912, and from the beginning it has assigned call letters starting with K and W to commercial and broadcasting stations. Moreover, from the start the policy has been that stations in the west normally got K-- calls, while W-- calls were issued to stations in the east. (Initially ship stations were the reverse, with W assignments in the west, and K in the east).

The original K/W boundary ran north from the Texas-New Mexico border, so at first stations along the Gulf of Mexico and northward were assigned W calls. It was only in late January, 1923 that the K/W boundary was shifted east to the current boundary of the Mississippi River. With this change, K's were assigned to most new stations west of the Mississippi, however, existing W stations located west of the Mississippi were allowed to keep their now non-standard calls.

On another forum I've seen a similar topic called Random Thoughts Deserving No Thread of Their Own. Occasionally some idea is deemed threadworthy and the mods spin it off into its own thread.

Just sayin'.

This comes up frequently in DFW because there are a few "W" stations here, but most are "K" stations.  There's always been a hard boundary, but the boundary moved long ago.  So the oldest Dallas stations start with W.  The boundary moved from the western boundaries of Texas-to-North Dakota, to the Mississippi River.

There was also a period of time when Ks were incorrectly assigned to some eastern cities.  It gets pretty convoluted, this page has a decent summary.

I believe it was the first commercial station with a regular broadcast schedule and that it began those broadcasts in 1920.

I have a hard time believing that Urkel-Os are a forgotten 80s cereal given that Family Matters first hit the airwaves in September of 1989.  Not much turnaround time there.

I have a box of TO's in the cabinet here at work. At first, it was to annoy my Eagles fan coworkers, now it's either extreme emergency rations or something to sell on ebay; I haven't decided which.

I've always wondered about this.

the K and W were assigned by international convention I think.  Mexico got X. Britain B?. Japan N and J, Canada got C.

I was following a car this morning that had a license plate holder that said "Lake Placid, NY 1980. Olympic Winter Games".  It clearly wasn't 35 years old though (could any license plate holder last that long anyway?).  Why would they be making a product like this at least 30 or so years after the event?  It kind of seems odd to me.

I'm sure you can buy them up in Lake Placid at the complex (and probably every other store in the town). I have a T-Shirt that says " Barcelona Olympics 1992" that was definitely made in the last 5 years. Its a retro thing.

I'd totally buy some of the old bills sweatshirts from the '90s if they remade them.
