I don't want someone who has gotten himself into at least 1M of gambling debt (and as much as 10M according to the bookie) and signed over entire paychecks to bookies to attempt to pacify said bookie and keep his name out of the paper. No evidence that he bet on hockey. Of course, you don't need to bet on hockey to owe a bookie a couple favors. He says he stopped gambling. Game #82, Sabres need to win the shootout to make the playoffs. You trust him to score? I'm betting on him to miss the net entirely.

interesting take

That's a pretty big leap. Who's to say ROR doesn't get intoxicated and commit vehicular manslaughter next season? Or Kane haul off and assault someone at a bar? I don't think it's fair to assume an athlete would throw a game.

I don't think he has signed elsewhere. Is it me or is it just coincidence that former Sabres Stafford, Vanek, Enroth, Franson and Campbell are still un-signed. Only Vanek really surprises me.

Is it that those players are not wanted, or that teams are offering less than their agents think they're worth?

Franson didn't sign until September last year so signings will still take place.

All of the players GA mentioned are serviceable so I'd imagine their agents are asking more than what has been offered. Especially Vanek.

The team should have around $8M in cap space left (give or take $1M?) after it signs all of its RFAs.

I'm not sure why they wouldn't give a 1-year deal to a guy like Vanek.

If we do sign Vanek, and he ends up on the same line as Pommer, do we call in the Rotten Core line?

No, we'll call it the "holy, sh!t, we have two wingers who can finish for the first time since Vanek and Pominville" line

Would be great to see someone not named Cody Hodgson playing between them!

Rather than buying Moulson out, could we trade him for a draft pick and retain half his salary? Can you retain salaries if trading for draft picks? That could potentially free up enough cap space for a 2yr Vanek contract. Thoughts?

Welcome to the board.

An interesting take, but I know nothing of the CBA.

Also, who is Hodgson you speak of?

I know of a Cy Hgsn who briefly played for the Sabres.

You can retain up to 50% of a players salary and cap hit. I still don't see any team biting on that at this time since he still has 2 years left. Maybe next season when he's a pending UFA.

Yeah, talking about a career going off the cliff.  He did have a few good years there when he and Connolly were 2 of the top 20 centers in the NHL.  FYI, another attempt a humor.  As an aside, it seems like if I have to say a joke is coming, I should strop trying to make them.

81 points in 78 games in 07/08. That's an incredible stat for him. A comment on his talent, or the league as a whole at that time? Or both?

If they played Matty Mo in the same positions/situations as we envision for Vanek, he'd be nearly as effective.  There is really no reason to deal with Vanek.

Well let's see.

When Jack Eichel was out, Moulson had 9 points.  Vanek had 10.  Put him on a skill line that plays to his strengths and he can produce.

I tend to agree with you to an extent.

I'm not sure Matt could put up the same kind of numbers as Vanek over the long-term, but they would be reasonably close.

I do agree that Matt was misused and not put in a position / situation for him to be as good a scorer as he historically has been.  A good part of that is the roster around him and the 'system' played.

I know realistically Moulson << Vanek, but the point is that Moulson is on the roster now.  If we buy him out and give Vanek a contract, will we realistically save any cap space?  and then Moulson would be on our books longer.  I think we need to just get the best use we can out of him.  He potentially could be used in a fashion similar to how we would envision using Vanek.

Trying to reconcile "fantasy hockey" style of roster management against reality.
