Sutter coaches a style that is rapidly moving towards being obsolete and did not want to play prospects, something that the Sabres have an abundance of

Now that Babcock has shown that leaning on talented youngsters can, in fact, work out, I'm hoping that the dinosaurs of the league take note.

Don't expect they will.

It worked in spades for Jean Perron. But, you've gotta have the right kids for it to work.

I've seen some warnings from Kings fans already, about Sutter - backing down a little bit from that.

I want a guy with his grasp on the locker room though.

@WGR550

Friedman - I think the #Sabres have taken a long look at BU coach David Quinn. They might make a play for him, other teams are interested

So, IIRC, BU had an ungodly good recruiting class this past year (including Clayton Keller, Keifer Bellows, etc.) and didn't even make the tournament, let alone the finals. The year before they went out in the first round.  Is he a good coach or a good recruiter?  If I'm looking at a college coach I like the guy from Denver.

Quenneville will be available momentarily.

DO NOT HIRE HIM.

He never could get out of the early rounds until he had incredible talent thrust upon him.

I'm going to be completely honest: I don't remember. I may not have thought anything--and I mean this in a literal sense. Though I was a big Sabres fan, I wasn't a huge hockey fan back then...didn't follow the league at large much.

I'd really dislike a Quinn hire. It's not because of the optics, it's because I'm worried he's more super-recruiter than super-coach.

Didn't Drury go to BU?

We may be on to something.

I actually wouldn't hate Drury. I know there's the whole former Sabre nostalgia which will turn some off, but he's had a rapid ascent in the Rangers organization, and I think other teams would/will have interest in him. If not this year, then next year. I wouldn't love it, but I don't think it'd be a move that would deserve to be panned.

But Quinn. Ugh. Hard to get excited about that.

Hiring Quinn would have too much of the trying to please Eichel Vibe, even if he is qualified.

Harrington will rupture an aneurysm though.

He is an incredible recruiter.  That is his biggest strength, something that however does not apply to the NHL one bit.  He would be crazy to leave BU.  He's got a lifetime job there if he wants it.  I read a great comparison recently, he's essentially the John Calipari of the college hockey world.  He'll have an endless pipeline of top recruits there. He won't walk away from that.  Just last week this quote was thrown out there.  Things can change fast, but don't expect it.

They did make the tourney this year.  They lost in the second round to Minnesota-Duluth.  The thing with top recruits is that, yes they are very good players, but they are still very young.  A strong crop of freshman doesn't mean you're an instant contender, short of a once in a lifetime type college player in Eichel.  It's getting those guys to stick around 2-3 years that will make you a true contender.  Teams with a strong cast of upperclassmen, with some good freshmen mixed in are the ones that win most of the time.

edit: And I should add that I think this assumed connection to Eichel is being overblown.  He only coached him for one year.  Jack Parker recruited Eichel though (nice parting gift, Jack).  I don't see this longterm connection that most assume is there.

I can see the Ruff man being interviewed by the Canucks. As for our team, I believe they need someone who is going to make these kids play to their strengths. A coach who is aligned with his boss. I don't know if I want a young up and comer or not, but I do want someone who can relate to today's athlete. Babcock would have been good but only for 3-5 years, then his bullying of the kids would wear thin like it did with the vets in Detroit. It's too bad we didn't get him this time around because he would have set these guys up for years to come.

The GM is hopefully someone savvy in all areas of today's game. Not naming names here either, I just really hope they get it right this time. This team had a tonne of picks and squandered some very high ones, and also gave up on 2 good young defensemen.

It takes a physician to get the verbiage right. I hate when people say, "have an aneurysm." You already have it. Then it ruptures. Thank you. Read two posts and call me in the morning.

Hire Pagula's son to ensure continuity.

I'm desperate enough to buy into the idea and have proposed it before. His eldest son and eldest daughter. If Terry's more about the Bills now, and the family has to run the teams, give the keys to the kids.

No thanks to Quinn. Let's get the GM in here, worry about the draft, then talk about coaching. Baby steps, no need to reach for a coach right now.
