So he was Byslma's assistant coach. Anyone concerned with that?

Yahoo is a conglomeration of other news outlets and clickbaity #fakenews.  I tend to not believe anything I read there.

The guy who wrote the article is Josh Cooper who is a staff writer for Puck Daddy and was a beat writer covering the Preds for the Tennessean.

I'd say he's a pretty good source.

LeBrun: Source told me today that #FlaPanthers "are no longer waiting on anyone else still in the playoffs" for head coach search.

Sorry if this was already posted

Or did Housley say thanks but no thanks because Buffalo is showing interest

I don't want anyone coaching the Sabres with the lingering stink of past associations of Dan Bylsma upon him.

This isn't a rational opinion. It's how I feel nonetheless.

From Friedman's 30 Thoughts

18. How much does new Sabres’ GM Jason Botterill consider previous NHL head coaching experience as a prerequisite for his first hire? “It’s not a necessity, but I do see it as a value,” he said last Saturday. “You can develop as an AHL coach, but the scrutiny from fans, media and organization at the NHL level, how do you handle that? The expectation to win is much greater. That said, I’m not going to limit who we look at.”

Botterill knows Reirden and Rick Tocchet very well. He almost hired New Jersey assistant Geoff Ward for AHL Wilkes-Barre, eventually choosing Mike Sullivan. Housley and San Jose’s Bob Boughner could be interviewed here, too. And I do wonder if he’d ask Jim Rutherford about Montreal’s Kirk Muller. Rutherford hired Muller in Carolina.

19. Botterill said there have been “no restrictions” on who he can take from Pittsburgh to Buffalo, with one caveat: no lateral moves. So, if he’s taking anyone, it has to be a promotion. He wouldn’t comment on specific names, but two are making the rounds. One is former Ottawa and Florida GM Randy Sexton, who is the Penguins’ director of amateur scouting. The other is Derek Clancey, director of pro scouting.

Further to what @TSNBobMcKenzie speculated last week on @LeafsLunch1050, hearing that Ralph Krueger is among those of interest to the Sabres

Not clear whether Krueger would even be available or interested in the Sabres' coaching job, but new GM Jason Botterill wants to talk to him

Obviously there are lots of candidates Botterill will want to interview over the next few weeks... but he's certainly an interesting name

For reference, Kruger was and assistant coach, and later head coach of the Oilers and is currently the chairman of...Southampton Football Club in England. Interesting switch there.

So nobody knows ###### apparently

Some speculation that Krueger could be for a VP position of some sort, as that's closer to what he does for the Saints.

But yes, basically.

Or we take Botterill at face value, and accept he is casting a wide net.
Gotta like that better than the last process.

His job resume from Tampa

That was 8 years ago with a terrible roster. He was only there part of 2 seasons during a mini rebuild.

PIT loves him as an assistant, I think he'd be good. All time leader in Gordie Howe hat tricks. he's tough passionate and a winner.

What has Housley done that Tocchet hasn't? Tocchet has rings as both a player and a coach.

I think objectively speaking Housley would be a good hire and obviously a Buffalo favorite but frankly Tocchet hockey wise makes sense as well. Tampa was practically our team a few years back when he took over for Melrose. That record has a big asterisk after it. I would not be against either guy. Housley is my favorite because I loved him as a player and he's a defensive mind. Tocchet is not as bad as many here think in my opinion but Housley is more popular largely because of who he is to this area. Not taking away from Nashville's defense but it's not like he's coaching nobody's down there.

During his time in Tampa, he clashed with his players, lost his room, and was pretty terrible in every regard as a HC. Sure, it was 8 years ago, maybe he's learned. But I don't feel like taking a chance on a candidate with some red flags

If the bolded is true, and it's agree Tocchet did a terrible job at that time (even aside from the horribly bad judgment with the gambling stuff) why the heck would we want him in Buffalo now?

I really liked Tocchet as a player. I don't see why we need to take a risk on a guy who spectacularly failed in his other attempt at coaching in the NHL. I have to believe there are other candidates with as much upside but without the risk. I don't know if it's Housley or not.

I don't give a rat's ass that Housley played in Buffalo. I want him because I hear players like PK Subban say how great he is and I see his defence owning teams in the playoffs. I want him because he is considered a good coach and we need a defensive minded coach to fix the ###### show that is our defence.

Correct. I meant to say he is coaching defensemen and that is an area we need to develop. Actually he was the type of defenseman we would like to find. Also I didn't intend my post as an endorsement of Tocchet just to say he's not the worst coach out there. I would
like Housley and be happy if he's the hire.
