I've been to the DR, but not Puerto Rico.  The former is less expensive but that is probably less of a concern for a major anniversary trip vs. a budget-conscious vacation with friends.   ;)  Weather was probably similar, though, and when we went in late October it was still very warm and enjoyable (although tropical storms can be unpredictable that time of year).

From what I am gleening online, PR is not expensive.  Part of the allure to be honest.  The big question for us is, stay in historic Old San Juan among all the touristy stuff or stay elsewhere.  Not looking for a resort.  It will probably be a vacation where we travel a good bit.

I should look into DR I guess.

Good point on PR being in need of tourists right now!  I can't claim to know much about either one beyond what little I saw in the DR and read online, but it sounds like if you want to get out and explore, PR is your best bet because in the DR all bets are off outside of the resorts (read lots of stories about "police" shaking people down for money, bad taxi drivers, etc).  The resorts themselves are very nice and the beaches are good but vary by location; Punta Cana is much nicer than Puerto Plata, but is also more expensive.

Cuba is an option now too, remember.

A couple friends of mine are currently honeymooning in PR. Could get some feedback for you if you want.

I have several close friends from PR. They all said to go to the Dominican Republic.

I believe that their exact words were "PR is a sh!t show! Everyone I know is moving to Tampa!"

Straight up vacations are still not allowed in Cuba. That was choice #1. The feds have a list of accepted reasons for travel to Cuba. Tourism is not on it unfortunately.

So I talked to my friends and here's the Cliff's Notes: if all you want to do is chill at the resort, it's great. But if you want to do other stuff, go elsewhere. I can provide more specifics if you want, but they were pretty unimpressed.

Unimpressed with PR or unimpressed with doing not-resort-things while staying at the resort?
