I know a prospective Biotech/Biomedical Engineering student who will be starting her freshman year at UB this coming fall. She is looking for a chance to shadow someone in the field for a day this summer. She's willing to travel a bit, but based out of the Rochester area. Can any of you biotech types help her out?

I don't know where I'll be working 3 weeks from now.  :(

This sounds like a great way to start up a new job.  "Hello, new boss.  Seeing as how this is my first day, I want to bring this teenager with me and show her the ropes."

Ha!

Whiskey - has she thought about contacting someone at UB directly? I would suggest she try reading through the science faculty profiles and emailing one or two whose research interests her. Flattery and a personalized message can go a long way in those situations.

If she doesn't have her heart set on following someone in industry around for a day, then I would definitely recommend, as bio mentioned, contacting faculty that does research that she's interested in.  I also can't recommend enough engaging in undergraduate research.  You typically won't be paid (but sometimes you can) during the semester (but you can earn credit), but this can lead to paid positions or be excellent experience to garner other opportunities.  It especially looks good for grad school applications.
