@BuffaloSabres
NEWS: The #Sabres have signed defenseman Jake McCabe (@McCabe19) to a three-year, entry-level contract.

SABRES SIGN DEFENSEMAN JAKE McCABE

Quote

BUFFALO, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) --- The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has signed defenseman Jake McCabe to a three-year, entry-level contract.

McCabe (6'0", 195 lbs., 10/12/93) recently completed his junior season with the University of Wisconsin (Big Ten), earning first-team All-Big Ten honors by registering a career-high 25 points (8+17) through 33 games and serving as the team’s assistant captain in 2013-14. His point total was fifth-best for the Badgers, who captured the Big Ten conference tournament championship, and fourth-best among defensemen in the Big Ten. In 2013, he served as captain of Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, where the United States took home the gold medal.

The Eau Claire, Wis. native was selected by the Sabres in the second round (44th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to his collegiate career, McCabe played two seasons with the U17 and U18 U.S. National Development Teams (USHL), appearing in 54 games and collecting 11 points (2+9).

Wonder if they'll actually let him play in Buffalo this season since that burns one year of the ELC?

Per Paul Hamilton, he will travel with the team to St Louis.

He would have to play 10 games.  They only have 7 left.

I thought the NCAA guys were different from CHL players in that regard. How many games did Ruhwedel play last season?

The 10 game thing is CBA-specific for all players.  I wonder if Ruhwedel's situation last year may be confusing you.  He played 7 years but did burn up his the first year of his contract.  That was because the 10 games was prorated to the 48 game season, so the cutoff was instead 6 games (or 5, I'm not sure on how they rounded that).

7 games.

Great to see McCabe signed, I hope Risto gets sent to help Rochester.  I will now actually watch tomorrow as I want to know what McCabe can do on NHL ice.

Ruhwedel wouldn't sign unless he played in the NHL last year.

This situation more of a "tryout" for McCabe

You can give him 7 games to see what he brings but still not long enough for an adjustment period.

I don't know if I'm sold on Ruhwedel on defense fulltime like others have said!

By joining the #Sabres and playing now, 2013-14 becomes Year 1 of Jake McCabe's 3-year entry level contract.

Let him hit the ice if they aren't burning a year on the ELC to see where his game is.  Otherwise it would be a waste.

No way Murray is dumb enough to burn a year of his ELC by playing him this season.  I'm thinking Shrader has to be right about this.

@kevinoDandC
An FYI: 2013-14 as Year 1 of McCabe's ELC isn't necessarily what #Sabres wanted. It's often a collegian's contract demand for leaving early.

That makes sense but I can't see it here.  We don't have to sign him this year correct?  Can't he go back to NCAA?  If so and we still hold his rights I don't see the benefit of burning a year on the contract so he can make the jump next year when we're all anticipating being a bottom feeder anyway.

Glad we got him signed.  I think McCabe is the reason that McNabb was expendable at the deadline.  Between McCabe, Risto, Zad, Rudy, and Pysyk we've got a lot of potential NHLers coming up through the system.

That is one thing I didn't really think about.  The standard is that they have to hit the 10 game mark, but the team and player can agree on using up the first year for a smaller amount of games.  That must be what happened here.  I don't know how common it is though.  I'm trying to look up some of the more recent higher profile guys, but most that come to mind were older and already had shorter termed ELC deals.

Edit: The most recent one I found is Jaden Schwartz with St. Louis.  More often than not, it seems like guys who do wind up leaving early wait until the summer to sign their deal.

I'm kinda with you. He seems OK, but I'm afraid he's just not big enough to play D if he's not a point-producing machine or bring something else, because I don't think he'll be able to defend against a lot of forwards.

Rudy does a lot of things very well... he's just a little too small for my liking (can get overpowered in the corners and in front of the net).  But, he doesn't look out of place at the NHL level to me.

McCabe's contract will not slide. even if he doesn't play a single game. He's already 20, so his contract starts as soon as he signs it.

Might as well play in buffalo if the contract starts now anyway.

The age cutoff where an ELC deal would be only two years is 22.  So his age has nothing to do in this case.  He and the team had to agree that he would use up the first year by playing.

You are correct about the 3 vs 2 year age thing, but that is different than slide.

Which now does explain why teams typically wait until the summer to sign these guys away from their colleges.
