My view of it: Mr. Wilson passed up a nine-figure capital gain in favor of keeping his NFL franchise in a rust belt city that history largely forgot during the term of his ownership.

What else can be said, but "thank you."

This was inevitable (obviously) and something that had been on Buffalo's collective mind for over a decade.

And yet when my phone buzzed with this last hour, one of my first thoughts was "I'm not ready."  Or maybe Buffalo isn't ready.  Can you really say "too soon" when a 95 year old man passes away?

RIP Ralph.  Thanks for making Buffalo an NFL city.

RIP Mr.Wilson, you've meant so much to Western New York, and hopefully you can watch the Bills host one from up there someday.

Not to be brash, but does anyone know the succession plan?

Inevitable yet sad.

The events about to unfold will now help carve his legacy into stone or begin to dismantle it piece by piece.  He will undoubtedly be remembered in sports lore as a influential and generous man who had either wisely secured his place as a hero of Buffalo or let his empire burn as he watched from the clouds.  We'll spend years talking about the greatness or folly of his posthumous wishes, but for now

May he finally rest.

Pegula Sports Enterprises issued a statement on Ralph's passing; I'm thinking that'll probably be as close as we'll get for a while.

Simply put, there isn't one.  Ralph's wish was to have his estate sell the team to the highest bidder.

It's been the subject of much talk for a decade.

All due respect, but do you have a link for that? It was "widely believed" that that was the plan, but others have reported, more recently, that there appeared to be something else going on behind the scenes. For example:

http://www.buffaloru...succession-plan

then again,

"Mr. Wilson has made it very clear that he is not going to sell the franchise while he's alive, and once he passes on, the franchise will be sold," The Buffalo News reported NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell as saying in August 2012.

But note, Goodell did not say sold "to the highest bidder."

I highly doubt that. No owner in his right mind would buy them with the intention of moving the team ASAP due to the 400m penalty. They may buy them with future intentions but not immediately

RIP Mr. Wilson, we'll miss you
