The actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York apartment on Sunday morning of an apparent drug overdose, according to a law enforcement official who requested anonymity because he was not certain the actor’s family had been informed of the death.

The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46, was found in his West Village apartment around 11:30 a.m. by a friend who had become concerned at not being able to reach Mr. Hoffman. Investigators found a syringe in his arm and an envelope containing what is believed to be heroin, the official said.

“It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose,” the official said. “The syringe was in his arm.”

Sad. F*cking sad. :(

I want to say, what a sad story this is and how addiction is such a nasty, terrible thing,…

but I can't stop thinking what a f####n' dumbass, to throw away what he had. I know, we don't know what struggles he had personally going on in his life, but his talent was undeniable.

Dumbass.

Went to my high school, I met him there once, we had the same Theater teacher (years apart).

The problem is, he was a Heroin addict long before he was successful, He said on 60 minutes a while back that he is amazed he lived through college. And that addiction is one that never really goes away. Even in recovery, you're always just an inch from the edge.

Clean for 23 years, fell off the wagon in 2012. Sad stuff. Addiction can affect absolutely anyone, rich, poor, successful, burnout. Rest in peace, you talented man, you.

Very sad. A great actor and, apparently, a tortured soul. Thoughts and prayers to his family. R.I.P.

Am I reading that right? The law enforcement official didn't really care that the family hadn't been notified, just that he wouldn't be named and look like an ###### if they hadn't?

Absolutely sad, heroin is a nasty drug, one that is very hard to rehabilitate from... It's not like trying to stop smoking cigarettes.... Pressures of Hollywood probably didn't help..... I was looking forward to him in the next hunger games movie..... RIP
