Just lose 5-4 the rest of the way and I'll be fine. At least when the trade deadline is over, Miller and Moulson will be gone and THEN we can start to see how much help this team is really going to need. It is just painful to watch Miller steal wins when we all know he is not part of the future.

I dunno. They are scoring at least. This is something they struggled to do before. If nothing else, even at the expense of defense which we all know is suspect anyway if they can score there is some hope.

If you remove some of the dead weight on defense (McBain, Sulzer, Weber) and replace it with (Pysyk, McNabb, Ristolainen, Zadarov) it seems like it probably gets a little better back there. The D aren't who we look to for scoring as much as we do the forwards.

I'm not saying they are great, but scoring is a good start. Besides, even with Miller gone we have no idea who will be tending the net for the Sabres. There are some FA goalies out there and I'm sure the Sabres are going to grab one of them.

ONWARD!

First time I've looked at the standings in awhile. The 4 games in hand with only 6 points separation was scary for a second until you consider the Sabres are on a 0.7 ppg pace. 0.7. And this is in a league that occasionally includes a loser point.

Carrying out the current paces, Buffalo is projected to have 57 points, Edmonton 62, Calgary 70, Islanders 73.

Sabres are on a 0.7 ppg pace....

I like to think that the coaching change has changed the outlook for our record, so averaging over the whole season could be a little too hopeful (in bizarro Tank Universe). The Sabres are on pace at 0.83 ppg in January. Edmonton is at 0.64 ppg and Calgary is at 0.85 ppg in January. NYI has played alright, at 1.13 ppg.

Projecting the January paces over the rest of the season:
NYI 80 points
Calgary 70 points
Buffalo 61 points
Edmonton 59 points

I won't stand by those numbers as a real expectation, but I do expect it's gonna be close. So, uh, go Oilers.

Actually I would bet those numbers are pretty damn close to accurate. I might add 4 pts extra to the bottom teams as usually those teams win a little more during that last couple weeks of the season.

I could realistically see,
NYI - 84
Col - 74
Buf - 65
Edm - 63

Give us a 18.8% of drafting 1st overall. Which means we will draft 3rd overall and the team in 10th will get the first pick.

But how many points per game do the Sabres need to get into 8th place?

They need 52 points in the last 30 games (1.733 ppg) to move into a 4 way tie for 7th at 88 points with Detroit, Carolina, and Philadelphia. This is 1 point ahead of a three way tie for 11th with Columbus, Washington, and Ottawa.

All of these maths use avg ppg over the season so far.
