Name your roster of historical whipping boys and who would win a seven-game series between them and the current Sabres.

Can I start? I don't have a full roster off the top of my head. But these three belong on it.

Jochen Hecht
Patrick Lalime
Nathan Gerbe

Cyr, Krupp, Andreychuk, Turgeon, Hogue, Smehlik, Connolly, heck..Barrasso.....I think these 8 alone could win!

Nathan Gerbe

I can't qualify him as a whipping boy. I don't think fans ever unfairly criticized him. He was criticized for his biggest flaw, height. He played hard, had some ability and made the most of them. Fans appreciated him, some a little too much, others fans saw his flaw and limitations due to it.

Most of the good ones mentioned so far. Connolly, Hecht, Stafford, Wilson

Some of the above weren't really whipping boys and were ok (ie Smehlik). Some just sucked and didn't get the brunt of the whip (ie Fitzpatrick). Some weren't around long enough to really get pissed on (ie, Kozlov).

Not yet mentioned: Andrei Trefilov, Brad Boyes, Maxim Afinogenov (only sometimes), Erik Rasmussen

Can Boyes or Leopold be called whipping boys? They just sucked and were deemed as such.

Saying 'Smehlik was ok' is fighting words.

The phrase 'Smehlik clears the puck ... not out' is burned into my memory. That guy was beyond worthless.

:censored:

PS - Trefilov was the #3, IMHO it is difficult to consider a #3 a whipping boy. I'd consider it akin to putting Stauber on the list.

I've gotta know what we mean by "whipping boy," here. To me, it means a guy getting undeserved criticism. If that's where we're at, it would take out certain guys (Cyr, for example) for whom criticism was deserved. If not--let me know.

To me, it is a player that was hated by the fans and would be booed mercilessly regardless of whether the criticism was fully deserved.

I think of whipping boy as the go to target of the team to always complain about, always point out when he does something wrong, undeserved or not. Leino is the current whipping boy, and boy is it deserved.

There's always fans who hate on someone. There's some people who hate miller. There are broncos fans who hate on manning in favor of tebow. Go to a patriots forum and you'll see brady haters

Clearly Turgeon didn't deserve his criticism. He was great his first year for an 18 year old. (40 pts) Even better as a 19 y.o.
He just couldn't live up to the hype around town that he was the #1 pick, the next Gretzky etc.

Oooo la la, Pierre.

If Hecht is in your line-up, he must be a centre. It seems only fair seeing as his whipping boy status came largely from having to fill the centre position as a LW
