With more rosters moves looming:

@kevinoDandC
#Amerks leading scorer Phil Varone indeed has been called up by the #Sabres.

Varone finally gets callup to the NHL

Quote

When an American Hockey League coach tells one of his players that they're going up to the NHL, the moment is always exciting.

But when a player hears those words for the first time, well, the body pretty much goes numb and the mind races.

So Phil Varone learned barely an hour ago.

The Rochester Americans' leading scorer learned from coach Chadd Cassidy that he is joining the Buffalo Sabres. Varone was promoted following the Amerks practice this afternoon and very likely will be in a Sabres sweater for Thursday night's game against the Carolina Hurricanes at the First Niagara Center.

@BuffaloSabres
MORE: Brayden McNabb and Kevin Porter have been assigned to @AmerksHockey (AHL).

@SabresPR
The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has recalled forward Phil Varone from the Rochester Americans (AHL).

I've watched Varone play the last 3 seasons.  He's alright.  I was more lamenting the demotion of McNabb and continuation of playing Tallinder, Sulzer and McBain.  Make them go away!

McNabb's demotion is likely so he can continue to play during the Olympic break

I'm with that. As long as McNabb gets plenty of ice time wherever right now,  plenty of ice time in the NHL after the deadline, and plenty of ice time with the Amerks in the playoffs, I'm OK.
Anything else is a mistake.

If this is his first time, is it right to call it "recalled"?  Should they just say he was called up?

The Amerks D in the playoffs could be Risto, Zadorov, Pysyk, McNabb, Ruwehdal and JGL.  The forwards, not so much.

...and Larsson, Armia, Porter, Ellis, Varone, Catenacci, Sundher, Adam, Roy and Jacobs.  Probably still short of the top tier AHL teams offensive output.

What's the story with Catenacci and Sundher Ink? Do they project as long term stays in Rochester to see if they develop the skills or are we looking at only a couple of seasons down there for them? Thanks for any input in advance.

That would be a very fun defensive core to watch down there.  As for Zadorov, anybody know what the timetable for the Memorial cup is?  London is hosting it this year.  If timing is conflicted would you rather keep him down so he can lead his mates to victory? Or do you disregard that and pull him up for the AHL playoffs?

IMHO, I think Catenacci has a little more upside than Sundher but I'd be surprised either ever make the Sabres.  They make renew Catenacci's contract when it's up for AHL depth purposes but I'd be shocked if Sundher is offered another deal.

No way they send Girgensons down to the AHL after playing a full season in the NHL just so he can compete in the playoffs. You tell the kid good job and let him go on vacation.

Good for him. He leads the team in scoring and deserves a chance. Reward him. He can't be any worse than Leino who is still under 30 shots on goal for the season if I'm not mistaken. Thats less than 30 if anybodies keeping track.

Don't give up hope. Catenacci does have potential. It's just a matter of him figuring out how to use his incredible speed at the professional level. I see him at least getting a shot at some point, but probably not a big one unless he proves himself in a short stint. Sundher likely never plays in the NHL, but there is a small chance that he does.

That's the damn truth right there. Would be insulting at this point I think. He's earning his keep here.

Oh and as far as Varone, I'm sure we're showcasing him for a blockbuster trade.

It's funny that people make jokes like this, but I read it, and then I'm like:

It's entirely feasible that these short-term call-ups are getting these young guys NHL exposure in front of scouts.  That would make sense pre-trade deadline.

Are there any rules against demoting most our team during the Olympic break, just so they don't become rejuvenated from the break and turn hot?

I posted this in another thread but it seems relevant:

There are rules on who can be sent down to the AHL during the Olympic break.

Rule 1 (87-day player):  If a waiver-exempt player has been on the NHL roster for 75 percent of the season (87 days) before this Friday at 5pm, and remains on the NHL roster past 5pm Friday, then they cannot play in the AHL during the olympic break.  Another part of the rule is they cannot play in in their NHL team's last game before the break.  So this means that they need to be sent down before 5pm on Friday and not play in the sabre's last game.

Rule 2 (16/20 game player): Waiver-exempt players who play in 16 of the last 20 nhl games before the olympic break, cannot play in the AHL during the olympic break regardless.

So that's confusing, but what this means is a player like Varone doesn't qualify for either of those rules, and can be sent down to play in the AHL during the break regardless of if if plays after the Jan.24 deadline.  And for a player like pysyk (who I believe has been on the sabres for 87 days), they would need to send him down before this Friday at 5 if they want him to play throughout the olympic break.

Tallinder, Sulzer, McBain could all be traded prior to March 5th so as much playing time as you can give them, is a good thing.

Nikita Zadorov must stay in London as long as his team remains in the playoffs. Since they are hosting the Memorial Cup and will be in the Final playoffs, Zadorov would have to stay with London until they are eliminated from that.  The tournament is May 16-25 this year so if London does well it could be May 25 before Zadorov gets released to play for the Amercks.  The Calder Cup is usually awarded around June 16th or so, meaning that if Rochester managed to make it out of rounds 1 and 2 he could play for them.

Given your rules above (thanks for the research), I'm expecting quite a few unpopular demotions to Rochester to come before the 5pm Friday deadline. Specifically, Pysyk, McNabb (already happened), possibly Flynn and Porter.

C'mon. The team stinks, and will stink for a while. Taking a genuine human interest in the young man's call-up is a no-brainer - especially given his interview in which he said he cried when talking to his parents about the news.

Phil didn't look too bad tonight.
Again, I'm wondering why Leino got moved up into his spot in the third.
Probably some defensive gaffe I missed.
