He'll only be in the Q for 2 months, before he's sent to Rochester to finish up there. The media is really making a bigger deal out of this than it is.

I forget when his birthday is, but what's the rule on that? If his birthday were tomorrow, could he play here or is he required to play in juniors until the end of the season? It'd be an odd situation if the Junior teams had to deal with players up and leaving in the middle of the season or playoffs, even.

I wonder how long until the CHL-NHL agreement winds up in a US Court under Anti-trust review?

It's interesting, but I think the fact that the player who is an NHLPA member has bargained away his rights would result in a big standing issue. (I mean, this stupid rule HAS to be addressed in the CBA, right?) Moreover, even if a potential plaintiff is not yet a member of the union, we have at least one strong opinion (Clarett v. National Football League), written by a judge who now sits on the Supreme Court, that would bar the action. Someone might do better under Canadian anti-trust laws; I don't know that stuff at all.

EDIT: Maybe it's a RICO violation! Heh heh.

I think the rule is you have to be 20 by December 1 or some such date. If not you have to finish out the season. SO Grigorenko has to play for Quebec until they finish the season AND are eliminated from the playoffs this year.

My understanding is that the most recent agreement was written after the CBA, so there is no way it could be included.

Also, a player in NC or FL couldn't be required to be a member of the union because of right to work, right?

"...lengthy prison sentence."

I'm still annoyed about that one.

I don't believe it was written after the CBA, but even if it was, someone (and it is NOT going to be me) needs to read it to see whether it incorporates other NHL agreements.

On top of that, and going to your right-to-work state thing (which I really thought about, and that really is the best shot--include Texas in there), again, read the Clarett opinion.

Also, as freeman has noted, you face a lengthy prison sentence just for discussing this. Probably 20 years.

I thought that rule was specifically between the CHL and the AHL. I didn't think it covered European leagues.

This is partly correct. The deal is between the NHL and the CHL leagues, though. And if I read it the way I *think* it reads, an NHL team can't circumvent by sending a player to Europe.

That 26/31 in the circle is impressive.
He was one of our better face-off men while he was up.
When he adds strength that could be an asset for us going forward.

I believe the course is to take the side of patience, unless the return makes complete sense. There is no point in trading Grigorenko while he's only 20 if he can rebound. He just has to keep his work ethic up, and prove to the Sabres brass that he should be up with the team. The CAA/NHL agreement is a bit of a joke. But, it is what it is. Here's hoping for a renewed vigor and some step in his game. He does not belong in the Q, and it is heinous that he's down. However, I truly believe in giving him the chance to prove himself through his play, heading into next season.

I hope they don't trade Grigorenko just yet. He appears to be the most naturally talented prospect the sabers have at this point. Yes he needs to improve his work ethic and hopefully he will in the ahl next season. Maybe he doesn't pan out in 2 or 3 years but with all that talent it's worth giving him a proper path to the nhl instead of the mess he's been through so far.
