So the prospects tournament will return this year.  Sabres won it the last time it was held, in 2011.

Schedule:

Thursday, Sept 5 - Columbus vs Buffalo 4:00 p.m.

Friday, Sept 6 - Buffalo vs NY Rangers 4:00 p.m.

Sunday, Sept 8 - Carolina vs Buffalo 4:00 p.m.

Then they'll do a one game playoff on Monday Sept 9th.

Anybody guess on rosters?  NCAA guys will be playing already so I don't think they'll play.  You can have 4 "vets" or guys that have one year pro like Grigorenko and Girgensons.

So did they invent some rules this time about the experienced players?  I seem to remember fans making a stink last time around that we sent an older group to these games.

I think we have a good chance to fair well at this tourney.  We have a ton of prospects that can go even with the 4vet rule.

I'd road trip up for that one, if I had nothing better to do and were anywhere on that side of the Missouri and Ohio rivers.

No less than seven players I expect to see time in Buffalo this year — Grigorenko, Pysyk and Larsson I expect to see a lot of.
(The others are Risto, Ruhwedel, Armia and the mighty Zemgus

Little bit surprised Jake McCabe's name is not on that list but maybe he has other things going on.  Either way I think we can see how our recent draft acquisitions fair out there and especially note how Risto and Zadorov add a lot more depth and grit to our def prospect... I will watch (hopefully) with great anticipation.

Also Kris Baker had some info on Boland (6'2" 180lbs)
Kris Baker@SabresProspects
LHD Connnor Boland (Peterborough) will be w/ Sabres in Traverse City. Shoulder surgery, mono last two years. Good size and very smart.

Looking back through the rosters for this tournament throughout the years, I don't see a single NCAA player who hadn't graduated or signed a pro contract.  I'm starting to lean towards the direction of NCAA eligibility rules standing in the way...

http://www.ncaa.org/...ible/Amateurism

Quote

In general, amateurism requirements do not allow:
  • Contracts with professional teams
  • Salary for participating in athletics
  • Prize money above actual and necessary expenses
  • Play with professionals
  • Tryouts, practice or competition with a professional team
  • Benefits from an agent or prospective agent
  • Agreement to be represented by an agent
  • Delayed initial full-time collegiate enrollment to participate in organized sports competition

Quote

12.2.3.2 Competition with Professionals - An individual shall not be eligible for intercollegiate athletics in a sport if the individual ever participated on a team and knew (or had reason to know) that the team was a professional team (per Bylaw 12.02.4) in that sport. However, an individual may compete on a tennis, golf, two-person sand volleyball or two-person synchronized diving teams with persons who are competing for cash or a comparable prize, provided the individual does not receive payment of any kind for such participation.

12.2.3.2.4 Major Junior A Ice Hockey - Ice hockey teams in the United States and Canada, classified by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association as major junior A teams, are considered professional teams under NCAA legislation.

There are other bylaws that muddle the waters and possibly allow loopholes under very specific, strict circumstances, but it's a god damned minefield.  Quick examples, a few of many many: if any of the players on the team were "assigned" to play in the tournament by the pro teams, instead of volunteering, then it'd be no good for NCAA players, because that team might qualify as professional (because the pro team required them to be there in exchange for their salary/compensation).  If the team that wins the tournament got free ice cream, it'd be no good, because that'd be compensation based on performance.

McCabe will be at Wisconsin preparing for the '13-'14 Badger season as assistant captain and in school doing what he does to again be selected as an Academic All-Big Ten.

There's a kerfuffle on facebook right now about a Marine who the NCAA has denied eligibility. Apparently he played on some on-base intermural teams (that didn't sound serious), but it was organized since they kept score and had a schedule (or something like that).

The NCAA relented after feeling the heat and declared the guy eligible.

RIGHT!?!?

Another fail by NHL.  They have the oppurtunity to expand the sport and show more hockey during the offseason in good markets (Detroit and NY) and they are to busy playing with themselves.

I'm sure people care. And considering how important Grigorenko could be to the team's future, I'm surprised that you don't. I would have liked to see how he performed, and I'm sure the Sabres would have too (hence him being on the roster to begin with).

But given all the pissing and moaning people have done over the third jersey today, I thought you guys would be all over this... sure it's an exhibition tournament, but not knowing the rules to said tournament & losing a player the day before it begins seems like a far bigger embarrassment to me than someone having a different fashion opinion than the rest of us.

Seeing on Twitter that Pysyk also ruled ineligible.  Same reason as Grigo.

Is that what is happening?  Link?

Edit:

Brian Duff was the one who tweeted that Pysyk can't play because he played too many games in the NHL last season.  But now we have this:

John Vogl@BuffNewsVogl7m
Mark Pysyk will not play for Sabres in prospects tournament. Team says he is eligible but coaches decided to bring just seven D-men.

So, either the rules say he can't play or the Sabres are only bringing a select few.

Maybe that's why they leaked it out? You are absolutely right. How did they not know the eligibility rules of a tournament they entered to play? This isn't some U-15 hockey program coming to play at the Webster hockey rinks. This is professional hockey teams and some of the best young talent in the world of hockey. Total bonehead move by the Sabres and these are the same people who are supposedly trying to take the Sabres from the bottom of the East into contenders. Good luck.
