Brian Flynn gets 2 year deal and Crawford get 1 yr.  Both were RFA's.  (With Sabres obviously)

Did I miss the Flynn thread?  Should that announcement go here since no one likes him?  I would like to know what kind of contract he got.

I like him. Not as anything more than a bottom six player who may never really be a full-timer. I think he'll be a little better version of Matt Ellis.

Not saying it will happen but I think Flynn has potential to be one of those late bloomers that could turn into a valuable piece. He has a lot more natural ability them Ellis.

I finished the year neutral on him. I think he has a chance to grow into the opportunity.

I wonder how much of this board was born after that band had their one big hit.

One can be better than Ellis and still decidedly mediocre. I'll be happy it Flynn turns into a reliable 3rd line player, because I think that's his ceiling.

I think the majority of this board quietly hopes Flynn is in Rochester next year because more hyped prospects have taken his job.
I don't think that will happen and not necessarily because the big-name guys flopped.

Why wouldn't they hope that he turn into Jason Pominville and surprise everyone? There are a slew of college free agents that turned into very good, too tier hockey players. The guy skates well, has good hands, noes where the slot is and is defensively aware. If was a draft choice he would be one of those hyped prospects

He certainly has the potential. But I'm saying that's what I see him becoming. More the role than the style/skill.

A slew of college free agents that turn into very good top tier players?   Who are all these undrafted top tier players?

Slew may have been an exaggeration but guys like Teddy Purcell, Tyler Bozak and Matt Read show that it does happen. In fact, I would bet it happens as frequently as it happens with any player drafted past the 2nd round in the entry draft.

Top tier may have been an exaggeration then too.  :P

3rd rounders make it to the NHL at about a 15% rate.  I have no idea how often undrafted kids get invited to camps and I doubt there are readily available numbers to find so I am not going to put much more than the minimum of effort into the debate but I'd be surprised if the rates of NHL success for undrafteds are about the same as drafted kids in rounds 3-7.

Granted, rates past round 3 are pretty damned small.

I broke my ankle last week so I have nothing to do for about four weeks so maybe ill do some research but if only 3 or 4 third rounders make it per year, ill guarantee you that that many college free agents do as well.
For the record, my original point was that the Flynn has shown a knack for scoring goals throughout College, the minors and last year scored at a 20 goal clip. I know it is a small sample size but to just write him off in favor of some "hyped" prospect is short sighted.

Would that be just college free agent class?  10th best D man? How large is that particular class on average year to year (D or all)?

Just curious; I have been meaning to figure out some sort of rank for Ruhwedel for my own edification.

There were at least three highly thought of defenseman last year most notably Dekeyser from Detroit and the kid from Tampa whose name escapes me. We all saw what Jrug did for Boston in the the playoffs last year.
By most accounts, Ruhwedel and Schaller who Buffalo also signed, were ranked between 10 and 20 by most experts of last years college free agents. We both know they are not always right so who knows.

Exactly, if the team has room for Flynn, it's not a good team.

I like his hustle, but at this point we need more than just hustle.

I disagree.  Flynn has had 1 year in the AHL coming out of college and he came into Buffalo and was someone who was able to have some production with limited ice time.  I'd like to see more of him in Buffalo but if he spends a good portion of the year in Rochester that is fine too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Flynn came in and played poorly, I'm just saying that with the current prospects "depth chart", we're in trouble if Flynn is still ahead of some of these kids, as it means we're nowhere closer to bringing the them along than last year.

If Grigs and Larsson aren't ahead of him on the depth chart, things are going to be painful to watch, I'm afraid.

Both of those players don't play RW.  So I would assume that on the RW depth chart Flynn is higher up.  If we were talking about Flynn being a C/LW then yes but he plays a different position.

Let us take a look at the Sabres depth chart:
LW: Vanek, Leino, Ott, Foligno, Larsson?

C: Hodgson, Ennis, Grigorenko, Girgensons, Larsson, Porter

RW: Stafford, Armia?, Kaleta?, Tropp?, Flynn?

I am not sure this is right but it seems like it must be close

Vanek and Leino can both play RW.
Didn't they try Foligno at centre and like the thought of eventually keeping him there?

Isn't Damien Brunner-RW still unsigned?
