My 20 y/o heart is screaming yes, but my 26 y/o head just isn't so sure. I think he'd be able to help out the younger scorers, but I don't want to pay alot, or keep him around for to long and impede them stepping in. I definitely don't want him if he is immediately given the C, I want that on a youngerish player, though this is less of a concern since Ruff isn't here anymore.

2 years, 3.5-4.5 mil per, and I'll be ok with it. And go to the first game just to chant his name.

I want him so he can be immediately given the C as I don't think there are any "youngerish" players worthy of wearing it. It might help some of them to see what it's all about.

Little or no value on the trade market for Briere.

Let me be clear: the wooki's idea sucks because no way Briere signs up for a 1 year trade bait deal. But why would there be no market for him at the deadline? A guy who averages a point per game in the playoffs would be in high demand.

....floating in defense, lazy back checking. Sign me up!

Seriously though, I'm not convinced at all its the right fit with the type of game Rolston appears to want to play.

Well, I just don't think he has much left and what could you get for him....a low end pick? Plus Flyers missed playoffs this year and if they knew they were going to buy him out, why wasn't he dealt to a contender this year? Jagr , Iginla and others were. That's all.

Two reasons he wasn't dealt. One, he refused to waive his NMC. Second goes to your first point, he was getting paid about twice as much as he's currently worth. But if his new contract is at a reasonable cap hit (3.5-4MM)? I bet you could get a first for him at the deadline (assuming, of course, he doesn't get another NMC).

Yup, the more I think about the more Briere does not fit the system we are currently advocating. I am out on Briere, I don't think he fits that well but I expect to hear he signed here. Hell maybe he will prove me wrong.

Briere and agent Pat Brisson are winding down team intvws. 5 yesterday and a few more expected today before vet forward makes his choice.

I'm with others that say if Briere means there's no room left for Gerbe, or Porter, then it is worth it. I would love for an even more efficient upgrade than Briere though. The best argument I can see for bringing in Brier would be if it somehow helps Thomas Vanek stomach whats going on and he is willing to talk extension.

Wouldn't common sense and human nature suggest Briere's ready for a truly fresh start? Career needs a kickstart, got divorced, mother died… Why back to Buffalo?

Maybe he could help Leino or is that soooo yesterday ? Sucks that the team is in this position to be rehashing the past for skill with players in obvious decline.

Not every player is going to be at the peak of their career on any given team. Some are on the rise, some are on the downslide. Just because the Sabres may pick up one or more players that are linked with the team's past does not mean they are "soooo yesterday."

I think I agree with you on this. If one of these guys is out than sure bring in a vet like Briere.

This is probably just a semantics thing, but is there really such a thing as a fresh start for a 35 year old hockey player. He's in the twilight of his career no matter where he goes.

I'm on record as saying that I don't think the Sabres should bring him back.

I do like Briere and do think he has something to offer. I want every young kid in the lineup. It will be ugly anyway, so lets see what they have.

Also, I think Briere will likely want to go to a legit contender for the cup in, what will likely be, his last kick at the can.

It's not just semantics. Briere's looking for a last kick at the can. Based on how he chooses, we may be able to infer what he values more: A chance at competing for the Cup, or a chance at maximizing his career earnings. (And, fwiw, I do not purport to stand in judgment of him choosing the latter.)

Welcome to life as a Buffalo fan. At least this year it's a goal scorer and playoff performer that we're talking about. Last year it was Hecht.

I see three key factors (in no specific order):
1. Money
2. Chance at the Cup
3. Comfort

Everyone is going to weight these in a different way.

He's got three teen/preteen boys. He said they would play a big part in where he plays. Maybe just maybe they're still texting girls they went to school with in Buffalo. They're getting horny. This could work.

EDIT: that said, i infer that his ex-wife has primary custody of the kids. i don't imagine she's relocating from NJ.

Close proximity to Philly has to be a factor:
@Nichols_NHLPool
Source tells @StapeNewsday that #NJDevils are among finalists for UFA Danny Briere. #Isles are not.

If we can get Briere here's how I'd start the season off:

Grigs, Girgs, and Larsson in Rochester on the 1st line.

Keep Vanek.

Vanek - Hodgson - Armia
Leino - Briere - Foligno
Ott - Porter - Flynn
Kaleta - McCormick - Tropp

Why? Because if Grigs at C starts tearing up the AHL, you move him to where Briere is, then based on how Foligno is playing you move Briere to RW either for the 2nd or 3rd line. Girgs can enter through the 4th line C and get up to 3rd line C by switching Porter to the 4th line. Unless Tropp is playing bad you keep him on line 4 or even line 3 depending while Flynn is sat unless he's spectacular. Larsson is sadly the only guy I can't find a place for outside 4th line C.

For the 999th time, Grigs is not eligible to play in Roch as an under 20 CHLer.

As long as Briere doesn't teach our players to be all floppy and whatnot, I'll be cool with him coming back. No shame in making a PR decision like that, especially when the fan base has been strained recently. He'd help on the ice too.
