I know I've read that TB's AHL coach has the inside track, but I don't remember where I read it.

The next coach has fallen.  Sounds like perhaps they'll be looking to move people too given their lack of success.  Maybe not, they are a better team on paper I believe.

Steve Yzerman made the announcement early Sunday morning. "Guy has poured his heart and soul into the Lightning organization for these past three years and we appreciate all the work he has done," Yzerman said in a statement. "But ultimately I am not satisfied with the direction we are heading and I believe making a change today is in the best interest of our franchise.

Erik Erlendsson (TBL beat reporter) just tweeted that Ruff is the leading candidate. Of course, even if he's the Lightning's pick, that doesn't mean he's interested. If I'm Ruff I probably just take the rest of the season off.

Let the speculation begin then I guess.

And there's this, which ignores a couple of years:

Kevin Paul Dupont@GlobeKPD34m
None of Ruff's BUF teams had kind of firepower he would inherit w/TBL. Would be like moving from Motel 6 to Trump Tower.

If Ruff does go to Tampa, it'll make Tuesday a lot more interesting. And next year he's in our division.

What an interesting turn of events this would be. Lindy Ruff behind the bench in Tampa would certainly change things in the East. Even more interesting if Stafford ended up in Tampa as well.

Our next game is VS Tampa.  Wouldn't that be interesting to see Lindy coach his first game with a new team and have it be vs the Sabres.

I think he could use the year off to recoup and gain a little perspective on things he did/didn't do here. That said, I think Tampa is an excellent opportunity. The downside, of course, is the goaltending and blue line. If Ruff gets hired, the unfounded Miller rumors would start instantly.

Guy Boucher fired by Steve Yzerman in Tampa.

There's immediate speculation from several analysts that the leading candidate for his replacement is Lindy Ruff, who served as Assistant Coach for Team Canada, under Steve Yzerman, who served as GM for that team.  Guy Boucher was the youngest coach in the league at the time of his hiring and had only one year of professional, non-NHL coaching experience.  Lindy Ruff would likely be the best option if Tampa decides to seek a veteran coach.

Ruff coaching against us in our division next year?  No sir, I don't like it.

Agreed. I can't see them hiring a veteran in Lindy, who just got fired a month ago, with what, 20 games left?

Cooper's gotta be coming up. The guy has dominated the AHL the last two years, they're gonna wanna see what he can do up here.

How can it be Cooper? - he's already in the organization, knows the roster and presumably is already under contract.  So  Yzerman must be waiting on somebody.

Yes, and I think that the guy he might be waiting on isn't necessarily going to pass up the opportunity to coach in New York or Filly next year just to take a goalie-less team on a trip to 10th place.  WHOEVER that guy is.  Just my hunch.  So I think TB is going to end up either with Cooper or an interim.

"First things first. Who will be the new coach?"

"Well, the popular name out there is Lindy Ruff, recently fired by the Sabres after 15 seasons in Buffalo. You could do worse, although I'm not as high on Ruff as some. He made the playoffs about half the time in Buffalo and had so-so success in the playoffs, but never won a Stanley Cup. He would, however, have immediate credibility in the locker room, particularly among the veterans."

FWIW, from someone who used to live in Tampa, Tom Jones knows nothing about hockey.  He opines once or twice a year and beyond that could care less.  He may not be "high on Ruff," but I doubt he even knows who Ruff is.

I know I said earlier I thought Tampa was an excellent opportunity, but upon further review, I'm not sure.  Unless Ruff were to go back to running a more conservative system, Tampa simply doesn't have the defensive nor goaltending horses to be offensively aggressive while keeping the puck out of their own net.  That said, they have a fully stocked farm system and might be able to leverage that into players more appropriate for Ruff, but as currently constructed, it might not be the fit I thought it was.

Lot of speculation going into that one.  Here's the original "report" from Jim Matheson:

Quote

With Guy Boucher getting fired Sunday, at about 7:30 in the morning Tampa time (has any coach every been let go that early?), Lindy Ruff can have the Lightning job if he wants it. If he does, the next Lightning game is against Buffalo and how juicy would that be for Ruff, who was fired by the Sabres a few weeks back? Ruff signed a multi-year deal with the Sabres’ owner Terry Pegula–I’m hearing about $2 million a year–so if Ruff wants the Ligthtning job and Steve Yzerman wants the former Canadian Olympi team assistant coach, they’ll have to work out a financial arrangement, which could be a little tricky with all that money on the table. Ruff could wait until this summer-Philly and the Rangers could be looking too if both miss the playoffs, but Stevie Y and Ruff do have the Olympic team history. The Lightning isn’t a great situation because of the goaltending there, though. Ruff had Dominik Hasek, then Ryan Miller in his days as Sabres’ coach and Marty St. Louis is 37 and Vinny Lecavalier is 33 next month. They’ve got Steve Stamkos and Victor Hedman but they’re in a rebuild

Davis then tacks on, claiming he talked with Matheson:

Quote

The longtime Canadian sports journalist was kind enough to give me a further explanation just a few moments ago.
Matheson is "pretty certain" that Ruff is Yzerman's first choice.  However, there are some hangups that could nix the whole thing.

Also, Jon Cooper looks like he was hired to the Syracuse Crunch, Tampa's affiliate, away from the Norfolk Admirals...

Quote

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie  1h
Not reading too much into this one way or the other, but Jon Cooper is currently on the ice running Syracuse Crunch practice.

He's listed as head coach for both teams:

Tampa's affiliate was Norfolk last year; they kept Cooper in the organization and didn't hire him away from another team.

Cooper is coach of the Crunch.  He interviewed for the Caps coaching gig over the summer but went to Syracuse.

IMO Lindy won't take on a coaching job until after the season is over.

I think he would rather be coaching Philly or Rangers.  But it's like many things that at first you say you want some time off to regroup, re-energize, then realize pretty quick that you miss it A LOT.

FWIW, if Lindy isn't coaching tomorrow night vs. Sabres the next TBL game is at home on April 14th

Sorry...wish I could remember the source, but somebody mentioned on "Hockey Hotline" this morning a rumour out there that Lindy was offered the job in Tampa about a week ago, but declined..speculation was that he really wants the Philly job, and is willing to wait until after this season to see if it opens up.

That would be a dagger in my heart...
