Is there a limit on a signing bonus?
Like is it possible to sign Perry to a 8 yr 40mil contract with 3 mil signing bonuses every year in order to keep his cap hit at 5mil.
If so, why not do similair contracts for Miller, Pommers, and Vanek?

Some of the bonus counts against the cap, but not all of it. I'm not sure if the percentage that counts in the cap hit goes up in subsequent years.

I believe the whole of a signing bonus counts on the cap - the point of it was to make the actual salary more even across the years - and it also makes the player more tradable e.g. Shea Weber gets $26 million of his contract in 366 days, then the remaining 80 odd over the next 13 years

I believe you are correct. See many recent contracts for Sabre players too.
I think there was talk of changing the way upfront / bonuses worked in the new CBA. Not sure how all that worked out, though.

Bonuses are treated exactly the same as regular salary in regards to the cap. The only difference is the player gets all the money on July 1 rather than payday. The issue to address the backloaded contracts was to reduce the variation between years. I don't think anything changed in the allowable split between bonus and salary.

But Getzlaf has a cap hit of 8.2 which matches his 66mil in contract years, not his 6 mil in bonuses.

Well that certianly doesn't help Buffalo in the slightest; how the hell are we going to get 4 stars on the team like Chicago does?
