I live in Raleigh, but I've traveled out to Asheville and Charlotte a lot. What area are you interested in?

Never been to Ashville but people I know live in the area. It's supposed to be a real gem of a town.

I was there last June on a riding vacation, and it's great. It may be the first time I've seriously considered moving somewhere that wasn't a transfer due to work. It's a somewhat 'hippie' town, like a larger Ithaca or smaller San Francisco. Lots of little restaurants, shops, and breweries downtown, with the more national chain stuff on the outskirts.

Very true, but also a great craft beer scene.  Lots of great micros and brewpubs in and around Asheville, plus you have all the touristy stuff with the Biltmore and Blue Ridge Parkway.  Most people in Raleigh prefer to hit the beach for their vacations, but I'll take the NC mountains any day over those overcrowded beaches.

The best three-day vacation I ever took was in Asheville.

Sorry I took so long to respond, I got caught up. I'm thinking of (more than strongly considering) moving to WNC and was just looking to see if there is Sabres following. At this point I might just wing it for now because I have come to the conclusion that nobody will hire in a specialized field unless you actually live there. I've been all over western NC and Waynesville is a great town. What are the opinions of each everybody who lives there?

Glad to see everyone erybody who just visited had such great times. Photography and traveling one of my personal faves.

That's silly talk.  Denver is in Colorado, and anyone who watched Hoosiers knows that Hickory is in Indiana.

I'm up near Hickory for work every now and then (live in Atlanta). Nice area and silly low cost of living. I've looked at moving out there, but it is a little too small for me personally.

Did you move there in time to make the Hickory Hops festival last year?  I haven't been yet myself, but I hear that its a great beer festival.

I vacation in Carolina Beach or Emerald isle every year since 1990.  I've never seen it crowded.  It ain't the Jersey shore.

Depends on time of year. If you go June through September its crowded, and I've rented beach houses at Emerald Isle, the outer banks and Oak island.  You ever tried going to a grocery store at the beach when checking in on Saturday?
