What would you do?

1. Work out a deal with the LAK to send Stafford and 2nd/3rd round pick or Adam there for Dustin Brown. (Both teams are struggling, and need something to wake up their teams. Plus both were talked about last year.)
2. 3rd/4th round pick for Tallinder (He may be somewhat injury-prone now but he's still a solid D-Man and may help get Myers out of whatever sort of problem he has.)
3. Leopold for a 2nd or 3rd rounder, being sure to stress last year's play. (A few teams are very D-deficient still like Detroit)
4. Probe the market for Gerbe, Enroth, Sekera, and Ennis's values.
Offseason
5. Finish season, if Ruff still can't turn the team around with all the new moves, fire him.
6. Hire Patrick Roy or Randy Cunneyworth. Maybe get them both 1 as HC and the other as AC. Let the HC decide what to do with the rest of the coaching staff.
7. Unload Gerbe for a 3rd/4th round pick.
8. Jump in on the Ryan Getzlaf FA fiasco and work hard to get 1 of them.
9. Trade Ennis for a vet C with some gas in the tank still and a couple picks.
10. If Leino doesn't play at all, hold him until next year.
11. Resign Regehr for lower contract unless he wishes to retire. Resign Sulzer to about the same deal as this year abiet maybe slightly more money.
Intended Lines 13-14 (With Getzlaf)

Stafford and 2nd/3rd round and Adam, not or
Leo could still fetch a 2nd if we were damn lucky (Gaustad style)
Brown is the C, if they trade him it would make the other players feel no one is excusable.

i dont see the kings giving up their captain/one of their stars for...
-a marginal 20-25 goal scorer (30 if hes motivated)
-a guy who may still have upside but also may be a waste of time
-and a mystery draft pick that has about a 15-30% chance of being a successful nhl'er

It would work seeing as LA needs another Center in their system and would give a potential 30 goal scorer for Richards and Carter to play with.
We traded Ruff as a C, they traded Gretsky, is Brown untouchable.......

You guys sorely under-appreciate our players so I am not surprised.......
Adam still has potential to be a very good Center and showed that last year at the beginning of the season. He has been cold since, but a change of scenery and coaching may be what he needs.
Stafford isn't a terrible player, he's just not a star especially made worse by Ruff's system at times.
A 2nd Rounder isn't anything to laugh at.
Maybe Dustin Brown is a little lofty, but if he were not C, it might be closer. Seing as if their season continues like this, they will need to put the blame on someone. If not the coach.

You don't give up your captain for a bunch of shinola unless there is some serious backstory. Richards and Brown not liking each other doesn't rise to that level IMHO.
And Adam doesn't project out to be a 'very good' center. Assuming he gets his head back on straight he projects to be a serviceable C or more likely a serviceable W.
Had LA missed the playoffs last year, Brown would very likely have been on the trade block as the team would have been handed off to Richards; they didn't just sneak into the playoffs, they won the whole shooting match. Brown might be leaving (I doubt it, but he might), but not for what you're offering.

I will say that the title "Flounder" is looking for a new owner, as the prior one has (admirably) broken his filthy little habit.

See if Adam has anything to offer, if not unload him in the offseason. Give Brennan, McNabb some on the job training in the remaining worthless games and determine if Pardy and Tarnasky are worth keeping. I'd also contemplate moving Tyler Myers but only if it gets you a top line player (see pronger for Shanahan).

Then I'd make some spreadsheets and have a nice hot toddy...and convince myself I am an honorable fella.....and go show my owner said spreadsheets the next morning.....
Then I'd take a well deserved nap....
Then I'd do an interview on GR, and head down the road to the Olive Garden aterwards.....

The question was, what would you do if you were GM, not what would you do if you are Darcy Regier.

I'm makin Phil Jackson coach. Guy wins literally everywhere he coaches.
I was thinking about who a good GM would be. Whoever the Ravens have would be good, but then I started thinking big picture. All a GM does is draft guys, but anyone can draft guys, so I should just get a team of really smart fans to figure out the draft. Also, how cool would it be if the Sabres players lived on an island in Lake Erie, and they only left the island for games, so for home games they'd all come zooming in on boats and we could watch and cheer.
Seriously, though, if I were GM I would make each and every player walk on the logo, and if I heard of any player not walking on the logo, I would trade him. It's nonsense. Trust me, I know nonsense. It's right in the middle of the room. Some traditions make sense, but this one doesn't. How can the current GM look on at what is happening in this locker-room not intervene? No wonder they are so tired during games. They waste all of their energies avoiding the damn thing and re-inforcing it to all who dare cross the room in the most efficient way, that you should not step on the logo. Dumbest carpet ever.

Leopold gets traded at or around the deadline - Return Unknown
Weber gets a 4yr extension - Price Unknown
Nathan Gerbe gets traded if I can and if not I resign him but on a 2yr deal for the least I can
Kaleta gets resigned
I trade Stafford and Pominville and bring in Corey Perry (UFA) and Joel Armia
This Summer I resign Vanek and tell him he is not getting a raise because we need the cap space. Gets a slight one maybe (7.25 x 4) If he gets pissed I trade him too. I don't want players who whine about making 7.1 versus 8. Hometown discount.
I give Regehr a 2yr deal for about half what he makes now. I think he is good for our blueline even if he has lost a step. He has the right mindset.
CoHo gets a 6yr deal - Price Unknown
I assume that through trades I have 2 first round picks and that at least 1 is in the top 10. I draft the best forward available or trade up higher if needed to get 1 of the top 5 forwards. Must be over 5'11" at time of draft (6' or taller)
I buy the stupid signed plate of Lucic running miller and I frame it nicely in a case and put it on the locker room door. It will not be taking down til we sweep boston in the regular season or win a playoff series against them or win the cup.
Ryan Miller gets traded next season. My guts says Ullmark and Makarov will be replacements within the next 3 years. I will take that gamble.
John Scott keeps his job but I hire a coach to work with him in the offseason to extend his usability. Maybe futile but I am willing to waste 700k a year on the big guy.
I Fire the coach and Hire Patrick Roy, I tell him to change the system and work with players but stop screwing with their heads
I fire the rest of the coaches and tell my new Coach to provide me with a list of guys he wants to work with. I use that list and talk to my hockey people to also generate more names. In the end we sit down and discuss. I will make the final decision on who gets hired. Our coaching staff will not always agree but they will be good.
I tell the players the sole reason for existence is to play hard for a city that loves them. Effort beats Talent. Play hard and you will win Lord Stanley's Cup. In the locker room I post 1 pick of every team since 07 who has won the cup, a pic with their fans in it and the look of joy on their faces as well as the teams.
I make sure that I have people in place to help the families adjust and be comfortable in Buffalo. Happy Wife Happy Player.
I attend every home game in person and watch every away game without fail. I eat, breath, and sleep hockey. I know something about every player on every team in the NHL and I am aware of everything going on in the AHL and juniors. Sleep is for the weak.
If we have bad games or play bad or what not, I stand up in front of the media and I take the heat. This isn't to coddle my players, it is to show them I in it with them. They should be focused on hockey not what some beat reporter trying to sell an article/ generate traffic is barking at them about.
Finally I do not ride the players on the team or call them out. It doesn't need to be said. If they slack for extended periods I trade them. Slacking is not the same as a slump. I will keep a player if the coach thinks he can work on it and help them improve their effort. I am not a Tzar. However their is a time limit.

Presumably, Colorado wants young, cheap talent in return. I've seen roster player and top prospect mentioned as their desired outcome. Maybe Sekera and Armia? Or maybe Pommer and Brennan for O'Reilly and a salary plug?
For the love of God, please do not suggest Stafford and Leopold for O'Reilly.

Said this is the around the league thread: if they take Ennis or Sekera and Armia, I do it. If Grigs is involved, probably not.

If we have a massive fire sale (which I doubt Regier would ever do) or if we just completely crash and burn this year, how does that affect contract negotiations with Vanek, Miller, and Pominville this summer? Would they even want to stay? Does it mean we're trading them this summer too? And would Regier ever do that?
The only good news is that it seems like this is a year where it won't matter if you pick 1st overall, or 2nd, or 3rd. There are some awesome players available. But knowing the Sabres, they'll string together just enough wins against back-up goalies to land the 10th overall pick and we'll be back to square one next year.
