If you're thinking about a particular move to provide a quick fix for the slumping Sabres -- specificially the firing of coach Lindy Ruff -- you better think again.
I spoke earlier this evening to General Manager Darcy Regier and asked him the following question: If things go poorly this weekend, how much will you be forced into big change, whether it's players or the coach?

Regier's answer: "It won't be the coach."

Regier said he's been pondering the trade market but it remains "soft" (there have basically been no big deals yet). He said there's a few moves the team can make with players from Rochester but that it's mostly on this group of players to a) get healthy and b) play up to its capabilities.

Guess we can cross that idea off.

I never thought it was a possibility.  Regier has stated over and over that Lindy is his coach.

With any luck Lindy Ruff will be Darcy Regier's Ronnie Jones.

I hope Darcy's comments mean that she doesn't know that she's the one who is going to get pushed off the Skyway.

I find it interesting that Darcy referred to the current trade market as "soft." That's the way she likes his players, so he should be in hog heaven.

Lindy Ruff can still be fired. He doesn't have a lifetime contract that cannot be terminated by anyone. As long as that is the case, I will continue under the assumption that Lindy Ruff will be fired. It may not be probable, but I will continue believing it to be possible.

Don't want be politically incorrect, buI have seen Darcy up close and personal while walking the dog.  He looks softer up close and personal than the guys he drafts.  And this is one soft team.  LIndy lives in my safe community  also.  His house costs a ton more than DR's.  Whats that mean?  WTF knows.  But, they are both way tooooooooooo safe. How many GM's and coaches get to raise kids in the same house for this long?

Why would Darcy fire Lindy? Ridiculous season ticket renewal numbers, 3K people paying $100 per seat to wait on the season ticket waiting list. 2M is sales at the Sabre store opening week. The fan base is happy and have spoken.

That's why the Sabres need to fire Darcy. That way they can hire a GM who isn't afraid to upset the apple cart.

During the Ottawa game, my son decided he didn't want to root for the Sabres anymore. He started pulling for the Sens.* Every parent on this board will understand when i say i want heads to roll, but it's not going to happen. Not this season.

* I told him he could root for whoever he wanted, but he'd have to find a new place to live. He started crying uncontrollably, especially when my wife looked him in the eye and dead panned, "Daddy's right."

Welp, seeing as how he just got an extension, I'm guessing that won't happen either.  What else ya got?

And just to throw some salt on the wounds of Ruff haters:

Quote

What sets Regier apart is that he has worked with the same head coach for 16 years and there are few GMs who have had to deal with as much turmoil.
Regier is a firm believer in the theory that if you hire the right person, there’s no need to make a change. That’s not to say he is opposed to change. He believes it’s important for individuals to change.
“The emphasis is on you have to change,” Regier said. “He has to change, I have to change. Communication between the GM and coach is important and you have to have the hard conversations and you have to be willing to change.”

Good to see Darcy already playing the injury card. I knew Darcy would never pull the trigger on Lindy, but stop making excuses. Injuries have zero to do with the state of this team. Darcy's a joke and Lindy has definitely lost the room.

LPF I've been where you are.  Much older, and my son played hockey to a point where he sees several NHL players he played against in midget natioanls playing in todays NHL.  Injuries cut his game short., . He knows and sees a ton more than me, despite me watching a ton of amateur hockey. His opinion:  we are not good.   AND, he's right!

Wow status quo from Dumb and Dumber! I know Darcy has no balls in letting Ruff go. I think this team is a mess with salary cap and with its coaching staff. Well year 2 will be a major disappointment. How long does it take before Terry figures out these two clowns won't get him a Stanley Cup. Edmonton will win one before we do with all that young talent.
Lets see there is no better player in Rochester that can score more than Matt Ellis seriously? What a joke!

Vote of confidence from a G.M. in any other market is usually the start of the death watch for the coach. In Buffalo it makes me believe Darcy and Lindy will be exchanging rings soon. And I don't mean Stanleys rings.

Even scarier is the idea that before Darcy made this statement, he got some kind of assurance from Terry that his own job is safe.

Totally agree.  I can't fathom why Pegula and Black did not wait until at least midseason to see how team was doing before signing him to an extension.

No surprises that Darcy gave Lindy a vote of confidence.
For me, the most interesting thing in that quote was Darcy's "I have to change."

You could point to the Ehrhoff/Leino/Myers signings as philosophical "change" but as far as I'm concerned that only marks a change a change of philosophy at the ownership level.
I can recall only one thing Darcy has done that shows a change in the way he approaches his job — the Hodgson for Kassian deal.
Everything else Darcy has ever done and continues to do revolves around the low-risk, patient, stick-with-our-guys-they're-good-guys approach.

I want somebody to ask Darcy "how are YOU going to change?"

Because right now all I see is the same old strategy of we are going to wait for Myers and Stafford and Ennis and Foligno and Leino and Ehrhoff and Leopold and Enroth and Gerbe and... to get better.

Of course Lindy won't be fired if its solely up to Darcy. You'd have to be a complete fool to think otherwise. It's Darcy's boss who needs to be pushed past his breaking point for Lindy to be shown the door.

Yep.

When Matt Carle was shipped to TB for two Dmen and San Jose signed Rob Blake, Rivet was the odd man out, ending up as a summertime trade.  There's a story about him being laughed off the phone when he called up a Buffalo real estate agent inquiring about the availability of five-million-dollar homes in WNY (he didn't realize what the real estate market was compared to SJ).  So he moves out here, then retires out here, plays for Elmira for a season.  Kids are probably still in school here.

I think Slava Kozlov is the only Russian we've had that's played a season or less for us, and the only one in Regier's era. That trade to Atlanta always did seem a little forced.  It's also possible it was Vladimir Tsyplakov, who went to go play Russian Superleague and for the Belarus national team after a season and a half of dealing with a knee injury.

I always liked Slava.

As a Thrasher: "I was there last year, and I wasn't happy. I have nothing against the players. But the management and the coaching is just embarrassing there. I couldn't stand it. The coach didn't respect the players. I'm very happy we beat that team."

Lindy Ruff you make me sick.
You couldn't coach a hockey stick.
Fifteen years and not one ring.
Yet Darcy treats you like a king.

Your're still the coach? I wonder why.
The team is soft and doesn't try.
Your system sucks, the players scream.
The Stanley Cup is just a dream.
