Does a shortened schedule help or hurt the Sabres chances? They had one of the better inter-conference records in the league, at 11-6-1, last season. Would a 40-50 game schedule against only Eastern Conference teams hurt the Sabres?

They can only play half a season. They'll either won the presidents trophy our finish last place. Depending on which half they replicate.

Problem solved. I propose a 40 game "regular season" to determine the seeding for a 30 team playoffs.
In that case, the 40 game schedule helps the Sabres, as I doubt there won't be at least 5 teams in the east that the Sabres are better than. (Not sure I'd want to go out on a limb and say there definitely are at least 7 teams they'd be better than if we see a deal in the next week or so.
