It almost makes me root for Russia.

So, who's getting up early this morning?

I'm in!    I am seeing conflicting start times.  3 30 and 4 00.

Nice tournament for the Swiss, by the way.   For the record, I agree with the "once you're a pro sentiment".

Way to go USA!!! It wasn't the outcome that I expected!  I thought for the US to have a chance, they would need a good start.  The skating is what really impresses me, especially by the defensemen during the breakouts.  The US has really improved since game one against the Germans.  An interesting thing to consider is that this team really hasn't played together very much since many of the college players had final exams to attend to before the WJC.

As for Latvia not playing Girgenson, I was surprised by this decision.  If Edmonton could let Nugent-Hopkins play then why can't the Rochester Americans let Girgenson play?  From what I read, Girgenson would have been Latvia's best player.  It isn't like Girgenson is an instrumental part of the Amerks effort (at this point).  It also isn't like Latvia makes it to the WJC every year.  I think the competion could have done Girgenson some good.  By the way I think Nugent-Hopkins should play.  N-H is of age and shouldn't be penalized because of his skill level.  He was available, so let him play.

I do like the Sabres prospect parade in Ufa!  Grigorenko, McCabe, Makarov and Armia are all young and still developing.  I wouldn't read too much into their flaws at this point.  I will take joy at their success!.

Both Russia and Sweden have very good programs.  The US skated circles around the Swedes two years ago in Buffalo.  But the Swedes skated circles around Canada two years ago and beat Russia last year in the final 1-0.  The US can't take either team lightly.  And they can't let up after todays (tonights?) win.

Wins against Canada don't happen all that often so for now, celebrate!  Go USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn, Jake McCabe's stock just about doubled this morning.  I liked the teeny tiny bit I read about him last spring when we drafted him, but he really got lost in the excitement over Grigorenko and Girgensons.

Hats off to the Americans this morning.  I woke up to find them up 1-0 and went back to bed after the 2nd.  On a selfish note, Jake McCabe looks like the real deal out there.  I remember when he was drafted the Sabres brass was saying they considered taking a forward in that spot but had rated McCabe as a first rounder and were surprised he had fallen so far.  I know Girgenson sounds like he's off to a slow start but Grigorenko and McCabe seem like the real deal!

You have a good memory.  I was curious about the board's reaction to when we drafted him so I did a search and found that original thread: http://forums.sabres...be/#entry398079

DEVINE SAYS: “We actually (had) McCabe rated at the end of the first round. We weren’t sure if we were going to get a forward or defense, but he was too high up on our board. He played for (Rochester head coach) Ron Rolston before, so we know about his character.”

There are a couple other good links in that thread.

Congrats team U.S.A. Great to see another one of our boys have such a great game on 'D'. Honestly until this game he's been mostly invisible in a good way for the U.S. focusing on shutdown play rather than offence but what a way to break out offensively and in such an important game. Great for his confidence moving forward. What it comes down to for Canada is they were simply outcoached as there really isn't that much talent wise that separates these teams at this point so congrats to Phil Housely for the job he's done. That and goaltending. Gibson played great. Subban not so much.

Shite ! Should be a good gold medal game. Both Sweden and U.S. sound defensively. Gots to pull for our boy Jake and the U.S. Like their momentum and the way they've played good team defence all tournament long. The U.S. speed should help their cause. GO U.S.A !

Awesome game. Phil Housley seems like a heck of a coach. This team has improved so much since the start of the tournament.
Whenever I see Housley's name mentioned, I remember Rob Ray saying in an interview a few years ago that Housley was the only teammate he ever hated or hated the most(I'm paraphrasing).
