i've come to rely on that buffalo rumblings site (part of SB Nation?) for bills analysis -- the guys who write for it are very knowledgeable (in fact, moreso than i can even handle). the piece on lawson emphasized that he is a fit for pettine's scheme. the new DC apparently wants to run a "hybrid" defense and lawson is a good fit for it. the takeaway was the writer's line about how defensive players for pettine may not be elite (although it's a plus if they are), so long as they are sufficiently versatile.

on the downside, i inferred that we could be quite bad next year as we work through a transition to a hybrid D.

On D they will have to give a new definition to brutal if they hope to be worse than last year.  But since this is the Bills we are talking about they just might be up to the challenge.

Lawson is a good signing.  Everyone knew who Mario Wiliams was, how'd that work out?

We shall see.  My money is on bust.

Hybrid Defense...  That's what you say when you don't have a real style you can play well.

i understand where that's coming from, but, from what i can gather, the hybrid defense approach is far from a wishy-washy non-system; rather, it sounds like a modern (can we say "cutting edge" (blecchk, i do hate that cliche')) defensive system. if you read the linked article, it says that a hybrid defense is based on the ability to create multiple formation sets based on the same personnel (or mostly the same personnel (like, 10 of 11 guys)). apparently, one of the reasons that the bills have been getting beaten like a drum on defense is that they would send a very clear signal on what they were intending to do with their defense based on the package that was out there -- so, if brady were to see players X, Y, and Z trot onto the field, he could immediately call a play designed to exploit that package's weakness.

hybrid defenses are built so that they can adapt on the fly to how the offense lines up and perhaps even dictate play to the offense based on how it (the D) lines up. i like the sound of it, but we're obviously in for another rebuilding phase while we get new personnel in here.

LoL..  Tantrum, huh.

The article also says you need good players to run it.  I admire your enthusiasm.

that does appear to be the rub. i'd held out hope that we could sign some of the rex ryan/pettine "guys" -- but the dolphins got that raven LB (i forget his name) and landry signed elsewhere.
