Not in the Olympics, but this is why I don't consider NASCAR a sport. 1/2 the guys racing have beer bellies! It takes plenty of skill, both for the driver and his or her crew, to be successful, but give me a break. When it comes down to it, they're still dependent on a car. This is why I don't consider it a sport.

The only reason I'm on the fence about NASCAR, along with many other sports of that sort (BMX, motocross) is that they really do require a lot of physical fitness and sport mindset. The vehicles put the playing field pretty even (like luge, skeleton, etc) but in the end physical fitness of the driver plays a major part.

This could be entertaining...

I've always thought freestyle sexy times should be a sport.

I won't watch any sport that is scored via subjective judging.  Yeah, I know, there are guidelines and techniques the judges look for, but any "sport" that requires an opinion to determine score is a sport I won't follow.  So, equestrian events are out, gymnastics in Winter, diving, etc.  Meh.

Agreed. I'd go so far that anything that is subjective or requires points. Distances and times, that's it. Of course, wrestling was in the classic games, so maybe I'm wrong. :)

There was a comedy out in the late 70's I believe that had a scene with a man watching olympic sexy time. The disciplines mentioned above were all in the play by play if I remember correctly.  The funny part was when the "action" got to the interesting parts he lost reception and his TV went all static-y.   I'm not 100% sure but it may have been Monty Python's- And Now for Something Completely Different.

I agree. I suppose motorcycle racing is a gray area. I probably don't call it a sport, but you can't be overweight and climb around on a bike like that.

There was that scene in Meaning of Life (?) where they're teaching kids about sex and they look supremely bored. That's not what you're thinking about, right?

Even when Tony Stewart was overweight/out of shape, he managed to win and win often. Physical fitness helps a lot, but Stewart showed you can get it done w/out being in shape. As for cars putting everyone on an equal playing field, that is to a certain extent not true. NASCAR has it's requirements for this, that and the other, but some drivers still manage to have better cars.

It's much more leveled than riding a horse though. The horse is such a factor in equestrian. Just like in racing, a good jockey can make a difference, but it's the horse that wins the races.

I agree w/ you on that. My main point is you dont have to be in good physical shape to win a NASCAR race. Again, Tony Stewart won a lot when he was in terrible shape. His blood pressure had to be through the roof. The drivers depend on their cars and they dont have to be in great physical shape. That is why I dont consider NASCAR a sport.

Hey, in the NL pitchers hit. Seriously though, they have to workout and be in competition shape to keep the zip on their fastball, break on their curve, etc... As for golf, in today's game you really need power and endurance. That means hitting the weights and doing some cardio is a must. Physical fitness is needed in both.

And 99% of the NASCAR drivers are fit too.  Stewart is an anomaly.  I don't really follow NASCAR but it seems to me that he was the only one that wasn't fit and trim.

I have no problem labeling auto racing as non-sport.  I just think your rationale for it was flawed.
