I'm not sure designing sculptures is her forte.

Well, someone has to work to develop that area of town. Too bad the Sabres never had a developper on staff in the past, might have helped speed up development of the area around the arena

Statues are nice but just like the new locker room, spiffy logo rug, and fireplace for the players to curl up and read romance novels by, I am not falling for it at all. This is just another attempt by Pegula and Co. to distract us from focusing on the 15 year reign of ineptitude perpetrated by DR and his minion, Lindy Ruff.

I know it's harsh medicine, but I owe it to the fans to point this out. Lest anyone give them credit for actually trying to make the team better when they so obviously are not.

A new statue will be unveiled each year however the player(s) will not be announced until three months prior to the unveiling.

Here is the blurb at the end of the 'about the plaza':
"A specially-designed pedestal, being constructed by HHL Architects of Buffalo, will feature an integrated lighting system and an illuminated informational panel and will provide a base for the statue. Construction on the pedestal will begin later this summer.
The statue will be the centerpiece of a planned ‘Alumni Plaza’ that will honor all former members of the team. Every Sabres player in team history will be immortalized on plaques that will be placed on brick columns throughout the plaza. Fans will have the opportunity to purchase custom plaques that will also be placed on the brick columns in the plaza."

I will probably get associated with TSC for my comment (or atleast just viewed as one of the "negative Nancies" around here, but are there really many players in the Sabres history that deserve statues? The Sabres franchise history only includes 2 SCF appearances, and no cups. Besides maybe stautes for guys that have had their numbers retired (although some have argued that they have been a little loose when it comes to requirements to retire a number here) and Hasek, the Sabres haven't really had a Gretzky, Lemieux, Michael Jordan, etc type of player, and they don't have a team history like the original 6 teams with Stanley cup teams.

It just seems like they are trying to make the team and its history out to be bigger then it is.

Hasek is absolutely in the Lemieux category.  He's the best ever at his position (or at worst top-3)...how is he not in that class?

I wouldn't dispute Hasek, my comment was more about anyone else, saying they will add a player every year

If the statues were going to be erected at the Hockey HOF then, yes, the list of Sabres deserving of one would be short at best.

But this is about a singular team recognizing their signature players over the years. Like the Wall of Fame at The Ralph honors Bills greats of the past.

I think Punch deserves a statue.

If I had a vote(I realize the costs aren't the same), I'd say scrap this plan, and build a Sabres HoF inside the arena in the space where the aeropsace museum was(1st floor adjacetn to Main St.).

Down the road: RJ, Pominville, and whoever the coach is when we win the cup.

Although I'd be willing to Drop Darling, RJ, and Knox if we wanted to keep it just about the actual team on the ice/bench, not the organization as a whole.

Don't be foolish. Pegula has tons of money which means everyone desrves a statue. How can you deny all time greats like Tim Connolly, Derek Roy, Kotalik, Novotny, Janik, Jillson, and Rory Fitzpatrick?






On a serious note though, the only guys I think deserve statues outside of the French Connection are Hasek, Rob Ray, and Possibly LaFontaine and Mogilny.

I won't defile this thread with my thoughts on honoring Hasek with a team related honor, but I can't think of anyone outisde of Hasek and Perreault that have had the combo of longevity and performance to justify a statue in their honor.

I could def support that idea.  Three statues in total, French Connection, LaFontaine to Mogilny, and Dominator.
