Let us start with this one:

Flames sign Dennis Wideman from the Caps in exchange for Jordan Henry and a 5th pick in 2013 Draft.

Wideman gets 5.25 million per for 5 years.

I touched on this in another thread, but stated another way....Feaster is in danger of making Howson look competent.

Who would you rather have Wideman at 5.25 or Myers at 5.5

Myers - they will probably put up similar numbers, only Myers is better defensively and is 22 with a huge upside. Wideman is 29, so at his peak

I'd rather have Myers at 6.5.  If Wideman is worth 5.25, what the hell is Suter going to get when teams with $20 million in cap space are chasing him?  $7.5?  $8?

Easy $8 per; but they will probably give him a 10 year contract to get that down to a 6.5 average.

I remember the Flames tweeting that $10 million for two years to Hemsky was a joke.  (that tweet has since been removed).

Should get pretty crazy soon.  Checked out capgeek and 20 teams are under the salary cap floor right now.  Sure, with some RFA's signing a few more will be over but that's still a lot.

At this rate his going to make Mike Milbury look competent. Massively overpaying him but this is a good signing for them, they desperately need to inject some youth, but this just isn't enough.

No I know but his a solid player in his prime, most of Calgary are past their prime by a fair few years. If Feaster intends to get more players in their 20s, even late 20's, they'll make the playoffs again soon. I somehow doubt that though.

I always kinda liked Darche. Dude is a role player. He'd be a great addition to the Amerks and for call-ups to the Sabres.

That won't cut it based on this tweet (at least not at the beginning of FA):
Renaud P Lavoie@RenLavoieRDS
Canadiens offered a 2 way contract to Mathieu Darche. He said no. Normal because he played on a one way in the last 2 years.

I bet reality is gonna hit him hard. He's an old man in the hockey world. He's going to have to take a 2 way deal if he wants to keep playing.

While I don't know much about him how about replacing Ellis with him, especially if we can get him to throw his weight around a bit. McCormick-Darche-Kaleta/Tropp on 4th. Would that work? As I say I don't know much about him, only read his tsn player page

True, but I have to feel for the guy.  I played for 17 years and it was hard - very hard - to hang them up.  I even tried to make a comeback a couple of times but it only served to prove that my initial decision was the right one.

There's  a reason guys like Cam Neely cry at their farewells.  Once it's in your blood it's hard to just let go.  So is he delusional?  Yes, but it can be understood why.

Thoughts on Alex Semin? (Don't know if this has been discussed much). Looks like he'll be testing the UFA waters, also know there's some character issues. However we need scoring wherever we can get it, center or winger. Especially now that we drafred Grigs, we may not be totally anti-Russian.

Alexander Semin:
Plays with Ovechkin and Backstrom - two extremely good players
Discounting his Rookie year he has a 64.3ppya and
over the last 2 years he has a 0.76ppga over the last 2 years getting only 54pts each year and
he has never played a full 82 game season
and he is about as physical as a twinkie
He has definite attitude issues
He will most likely get around 6-7mil either here or in the KHL

In short no, I have no desire to pay a player who is essentially drew stafford more money. Actually if we use hits as a measure of toughness stafford had 3x as many hits last season.  Semin is a lot of nothin in a very expensive pain in the ass package.

The Sabres already have enough cancer. They need chemo, not more cancer.

Semin might actually cause that vein in Lindys forehead to finally rupture.

I've just thought, doesn't Wideman's contact put him on par with Myers? Thats put the emphasis on overpayment.

Looking at the TSN comments some Flame fans like this move and don't want to rebuilt, remaining slightly competitive is enough. Bizarre.

Sounds a lot like what we have seen on this board over the years.

The Wideman contract could end up being an omen of how free agency will go. If Wideman can garner $5+ a year, what will the Sabres be able to buy with only $10 mil to spend?  They still have to sign Ennis, and unless he is moved that will leave the Sabres closer to only having $7 mil left for free agency. That's not enough bait to land a big fish.

Almost every professional hockey journo has counted us out of the 'big fish' race as it were. I think it is time to stop thinking that we will land Parise/Suter/Nash/etc. Doan is our best bet imho. I would keep our D the same.

And I say Sabres community have never been happy with just getting into 8th, there has always been a desire for more. Management were happy when we had no money to play with. There's never been any doubting the ambition of this organisation in my mind.

Doan is 35, if he leaves Phoenix it will likely be to go to a contender for a chance at a Cup. Other than a heavily front loaded contract, why would Doan come to Buffalo?  Do the Sabres really want to overpay for a 35 year old?

Saw a piece on that Justin Schultz last night. Anyone interested in seeing the Sabres take a run at him? Not often a talented 22 year old hits the free agent market. I like the idea.

And where are we going to put him, and why do we want to sign a 22 year old who has proven nothing and already wanted more than 1 NHL team were offering. The kid has 'diva' written all over him. He'll get a massive contract and underperform.

I think this team has the ability to make it and we have a better chance than quite a lot of the powerhouses, as we saw with the Kings. I know his old and is playing for a chance for the cup but surely thats more reason to sign him. He has the attitude we need.
