RJ has been so much a part of my life......a soundtrack for most of it.
Congrats on his trip to Toronto and a little piece of frozen immortality.

I'm not sure if I have a right to be, but part of me is swelling with pride for him.

Great news. I know his playcalling ("SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRES") rubs some people the wrong way, but in my limited experience, there is none better in the league at actually calling the play-by-play.

Congratulations, Rick

I've also never heard any other announcer know the other teams as well as he does.  Most of the time the other feeds just call out a players number unless it's 1 of 5 or 6 players.

He does have a way for invention the pronunciation of one player per team that I get a kick out of.

He finally joins Ted Darling in the HoF (Foster Hewitt Memorial Award Winner in '94).

The other Buffalo media 'members' of the HoF are Charlie Barton ('84), Dick Johnston ('86), and my favorite hockey writer of all time - Jim Kelley ('04) who all won the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award.

What's that say about your hockey team when there are nearly as many media members of the HoF as actual players?  (5 to 8, and 3 of those 8, I would NEVER consider to be 'Sabre HoFers' - Dick Duff, Clark Gillies, and Doug Gilmour and a couple of others definitely had their best days elsewhere.)

We'll need Hasek to get in soon just to get the ratio to reasonable.

EDIT: D*mn, nearly forgot, CONGRATULATIONS RJ - You deserve it, you've earned it.  It's no longer Houda Man? - Doug da man.  You are defintiely DA MAN.  Thank you for all the years of calling the games.  :worthy: :worthy: :worthy:

Here's to many more.

I still remember breaking down in my truck listening to the RJ tribute on the radio before a game last season. Just like thousands of other Buffalonians, his voice has been an integral part of my life, and was the backdrop to quite a few emotional moments.

He deserves it.

That was one of the handful of games I got to last year.  It was a good tribute.

Just hearing his calls in my mind gives me chills...specifically the goals in OT against Ottawa and Carolina...

Simply magical. Probably the only part of this team I will tell my grandkids about.

He's just the best.  I would probably not be as big of a Sabres fan without him.  Growing up when not all of the games were on TV, I listened to RJ on countless radio games.  He always painted such a vivid picture of the game.  My friends and I quote him all the time watching games, he is part of the fabric of our hockey experience.
I want so badly for him see the Sabres skate the Cup.

Congrats RJ, you are so very deserving!

A few times a year I watch the sabres rangers full game 5 just for the memory. Not only was that probably the most exciting, fast paced game from start to finish, but RJ was a classic that game. Whenever I'm amidst a conversation and someone uses the words "who else?" I can't help but shout "who else, who else!" in my Jeanneret voice.

such a class act, and such a talent.

Vogl's write-up notes that RJ still refers to Darling as "the voice of the Buffalo Sabres."

RJ is a prince.
