You still have CDs? That's so 2000-ish.. :)

Throw them right on the 45s, albums, 8-track, cassette pile....

Cd's just sound better. MP3s (or 4s or whatever) sound like AM radio by comparison to me. I think this is the first time in the history of recorded music where the newer format actually sounds worse than the one that preceded it. That makes me sad.

I still buy music on CDs for two reasons: what you wrote, and because I don't want DRM to limit what devices I can put my music on. Ninety percent of the time, I'm listening through some sort of MP3 player, even through my home system, but when I want to listen to something that's really nuanced, like any classical music or a Pink Floyd album or jazz, I'll pull out the CD.

Where's CDX with his input on this?

This. Fortunately for me, there are still lots of people who realize that CDs still offer the best of all worlds - you have the tangible product, the sound is great, it's a backup copy that will last forever if well cared for, and you have the freedom to copy it to any device you like. Plus, the robust second-hand market makes them dirt cheap. Interestingly, the vast majority of my CD sales now are international.

Deluca, when I first read your title I thought this was an early Xmas thread.

Of course MP3s are going to sound worse. They're compressed using lossy algorithms. If you want something that sounds as good as a CD, record the music in a lossless format, such as FLAC.

I download all my music, usually .mp3s but FLAC if I feel it's worth the disk space.

I pre-ordered a CD (a bundle with a vinyl, a teeshirt, messenger bag, autographed lithogram, etc) of one of my favorite bands earlier this year and Atlantic Records completely botched the process. First of all they told me my credit card had been charged in a confirmation e-mail, while I later find out they don't charge until they ship the item. They released a digital download a week early for those who pre-ordered, but the digital download accounted for $7 of the total price -- so when you click the download link, it charges you $7. Well, apparently their servers weren't ready for the traffic, because the website kept crashing before people's downloads would actually start. I clicked download about 10 times before I gave up and was credited with $70 worth of pending charges on my account. Of course, the charges would be removed a few days later, but the next day when they went to ship out the items, my account didn't have enough money in it due to their $63 worth of false charges, and my order was cancelled entirely. For some reason the vinyl showed up a few weeks later, but nothing else.

Long story short that is the last time I ever try to buy a CD again.

How ironic. I don't think even you expected that, let alone the rest of us.

BTW, do you have Aerial View by Gamalon?

speaking of old school...the wife and i went to philly to see cheap trick last night. i had never seen them but it sounded like fun. about 2/3 of the way through the show rick neilson mentiones they have a new release out, and he wanted to thank all their loyal fans for "MAKING THIS THE #1 SELLING 8-TRACK TAPE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW! THIS, RIGHT HERE, IS THE HIGHEST SELLING 8-TRACK ON THE CHARTS...THANK YOOOOOU!!!"

it was kinda funny. i was never a huge fan but i couldn't believe what a good show they put on...for a guy in his mid-60s rick neilson is a monster on lead.

Did Bun E. Carlos still have the 2" long cigarette butt working?

Never saw them play live, but they're one of the few that I've missed that I'd like to see.

I saw them play live at UB. They decided to play six songs and then leave. A cheap trick indeed.

sadly he was not onstage. i thought he was still supposed to be with them, but he wasn't there.

but robin zander can still hit the high notes! it was big fun. if you really want to see them go to their website and check the schedule. i think they pretty much tour nonstop.
