Regier, I am sure, made a call regarding Wallin. Wallin is a horse. Strong down low, where the Sabres need it. He clears guys out and can skate and gets very physical when the playoff starts.

Buffalo, with Lydman, Montador and Butler, are weak down low. Rivet can't deal with every aggressive forward they face. He looks tired. Myers is green and looks lost sometimes. He was playing too far away from the cease for two months, now his is closer and getting more body on guys crashing the net. Myers is just super. But he also tires quickly in his shifts. He can only stay out there for about 35-40 seconds. Tallinder, if he can't outskate a guy or take a perfect angle, is useless down low. He is great in space and when he can use his poke check. So, Staios would be a nice fit. He is an older gent, about 35-36. A good Ontario boy who would be a good playoff type who could get hot and take Montador, Butler or Lydmans spot. Ethan is just the center the Sabres need. Not super talented, but he add the size they will need to play the Pens or Caps -- who boast great size in the middle with (pens: stal, crosby, malkin, adams; Caps: Steckel, Backstrom, Morrison (plays big)). Moreau is a gritty player and a great character type. Seasoned vets are nice to have this time of year. Kennedy is too small to be the 3rd guy when you have Connolly and Roy -- two smurfs up front. Gaustad becomes a more valuable player when Moreau arrives. That is your trade.

Sorry, but Staios is not a better PP leader than anyone the Sabres presently have and Moreau may be a great leader but his offensive contributions barely surpass what Mair gives the Sabres right now. Neither would make a big impact IMO.

Wasn't there talk of trading Max for Svatos last year? Basically trading one bad contract for another in hopes that the change of scenery would help both. Liles has been rumored to be on the trading block because he is underperforming so much.

I like this deal except how do you take on 7+ mil in cap hit(Stillman under contract for 1 more season, Ballard for 5 more years) when you are only giving up 3 mil in cap hit?

That's what both Bucky Gleason of TBN and Adrian Dater of Denver Post reported last year. I'm not completely convinced that Svatos would be a huge help but despite the offensive slump he's mired in since his ACL surgery, the Denver media reports attest to his solid work ethic (evidenced by Sacco keeping him in the lineup) and he's been great in shootouts (4-for-7). He's an UFA this summer so the Sabres can always walk away if he doesn't pan out.

He certainly would be an improvement over MacArthur IMO, even though Liles would be the main target in that proposal.

I recognized the disparity in cap hit ($7.7M in, $2.9M out) but I was surmising that if Regier were able to acquire a defenseman of Ballard's caliber, he likely would not worry about trying to re-sign Tallinder in the offeason (which, based on Tallinder's rebound season and current salary, could end up costing in the same $4M - 4.5M range that Ballard earns). With both Tallinder's ($2.6M) and Lydman's ($2.8M) current cap hits removed this summer due to free agency, that's $5.4M of cap relief. One would expect that the Sabres will replace Lydman with Weber in any event and I think dropping MacArthur's salary in the summer as an RFA ($1.4M cap hit) is also foreseeable with prospects like Gerbe and Ennis pushing for NHL spots.

Also, Ballard is signed for 4 more years after this season, which would make him 31 when the deal expires - seems like a good price for a defenseman's "peak years".

Which still doesn't answer the intended question. What about staying under the cap THIS SEASON?

After the trade deadline, the Sabres have 20 games remaining - or roughly 25% of the season. I may be off-base on this but as I understand the CBA, salaries and their respective cap hits go down as the number of games left reduces - which is why so many teams reportedly make less trades in the beginning of a season than near the end. Take the difference between the two cap hits ($7.7M in, $2.9M out = $4.8M) and factor in that the Sabres would be on the hook for the remaining 25% of the salaries/cap hit and it results in only $1.2M over their current payroll right now. Barring other roster changes in the offseason, the $4.8M cap delta would then kick in at the start of next season - but that's where I noted the absence of the $5.4M cap hit from Tallinder/Lydman.

Again, my math and reasoning may be wrong but from what I've read and heard, it seems feasible.

I don't know how accurate this calculator is, but if you select the two teams and then the four players involved in the trade, it looks like the Sabres would still be under the cap by 200-300k.
